Gordon Smith's Plant Fined for Dumping Waste

Senator Gordon Smith's frozen foods processing plant in Pendleton has been fined yet again for dumping waste into a stream running past the plant.

From the Oregonian:

Smith Frozen Foods, the Pendleton-area processing plant owned by U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith, has paid a $3,000 fine for discharging wastewater into a nearby creek in late July.
It marks at least the third time since the early 1990s that the company has been fined for polluting Pine Creek, which runs past the plant located a few miles from the city.

In his first bid for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Ron Wyden, Smith came under fire by environmental groups for the way he ran his processing plant and for previous spills into Pine Creek. The plant's record could become a factor in next year's election as well, said Marc Siegel, spokesman for the Oregon Democratic Party.

"It doesn't look good," he said about the fine. "If your charge is to make laws, and you are charged with breaking laws, you've put yourself in a bind."

2. A lot of companies will pay the fine... because the profit is woth it..
On a side note... stop eating crappy frozen foods. Learn to cook, eat sandwhiches or left overs, and make your own frozen dishes for those nights that are on the go... Like making an extra lazana or mac n' cheese and freezing it.

Frozen foods cost more energy to make than the nutritional calories it serves. Its about as bad as eating at McDonald's.

3. If he had a lick of common sense, he'd build a wastewater treatment
wetland there and get in the newspaper and be a big hero. But he's too greedy and stupid to do anything socially and environmentally responsible like that.

5. Smith's running scared
out here in Oregon. Lots fed up with his flip-floppery of convenience. He tosses out moderate opinions but has a voting record 90% in accord with the White House. I sometimes give him credit for some environmental wins, but all Oregonians are pretty selfish about our Nature.

'bye Gordon.

7. For the past year
Gordo has known that his seat is not safe. He's tried to show that he is more moderate, yet his voting record proves that to be false.

This idiotic move does not help.

Yipee!

Don't know how he's doing up north, but down here when he came for a town meeting (red county w/blue pockets), only a dozen people showed up. In contrast, whenever Pete DeFazio or Ron Wyden come, the room at City Hall is packed.
