1. Wonderful, isn't it?
Except they're still charging for the daily crosswords.

What does that say about things?

4. Crosswords are run by a different company
Found that out when I tried to change my account on that feature. Had to call a different number where someone explained that to me.

9. If you need your crossword fix...
...try this link:

http://www.crossword-puzzles.co.uk/

I just do the American crosswords, the first group of links on the left -- most of them are free.

Yes I know, the NYTimes crosswords are in a class by themselves. They do have a weekly free crossword which I do every Monday.

HTH.

3. I could never understand why they felt anyone would pay one cent for access to Maureen Dowd.

11. That was the last day I bought the Times. Too elitist, by design, and a very un-
American thing for them to do, in my mind.
I had already started finding O'Dowd's columns to be more and more cloying and less interesting, so it was no big loss.
Now that they've rescinded that "Select" business, I've learned to do without it.

The NYT is quoted in enough articles elsewhere to get the gist of what they have to say, anyway.

10. I got an e-mail from TimesSelect the other day:
Dear Home Delivery Subscriber,

We are ending TimesSelect, effective today. This will not affect any services you are already receiving as a home delivery customer. The Times's Op-Ed and news columns are now available to everyone free of charge, along with Times File and News Tracker. In addition, The New York Times online Archive is now free back to 1987 for all of our readers.

Why the change? Since we launched TimesSelect, the Web has evolved into an increasingly open environment. Readers find more news in a greater number of places and interact with it in more meaningful ways. This decision enhances the free flow of New York Times reporting and analysis around the world. It will enable everyone, everywhere to read our news and opinion - as well as to share it, link to it and comment on it. All other benefits of home delivery remain the same.

You will continue to have complimentary access (100 articles every month) to the complete online Archive back to 1851. For additional benefits, including ourAll Access suite of digital products, click here: http://www.nytimes.com/allaccess. We thank you for your support of TimesSelect, and hope you continue to enjoy The New York Times in all its electronic and print forms.

For more information, including answers to frequently asked questions, click here:

Sincerely,

Vivian Schiller
Senior Vice President & General Manager

So, TimesSelect is gonzo!
