Does anyone else find father/daughter "purity balls" a little creepy?
http://www.americablog.com/2007/09/purity-balls.html

I mean, the idea of having a ball where fathers and daughters pledge purity to each other - it all seems like another bit of fundy creepiness to me. Is it just me?

4. No, it's perfectly creepy.
I saw an ad for Captial One last night where a 40 type year old guy dressed as the tooth fairy comes into a little girl's room. I thought that was creepy too. My SO said not all older men are after little girls. Captial One might think it was a cute ad but I didn't like it. Must've been thought up by an ad guy in Florida...the child molestor state.

7. Not just you
find it creepy, believe me. There have been several threads on these type of events on DU in the past and the vast majority of posters share your opinion. Just when you think fundamentalist right wing religious wackos can't get any more nuts, darned if they don't go out and do something that makes you scratch you head in wonder and say :wtf: is that all about?

13. What gets me is that these bozos actually think they are on to something. "Chastity Clubs" etc.
have been around for years - and have been a standing joke for years. When I was in high school the prom queen in our class was in a "chastity club" - and managed to somehow get preggers at one of the parties sponsored by the club.

9. YES! Why don't they have mother and son purity balls?
:rofl: My son would flip a lid over that one!

How does a father pledge his purity to his daughter? Isn't he already "tainted" from having yucky sex with the daughter's mother? How bizarre.

11. Who are they trying to kid anyway?
I'll bet 99.99% of the fathers slept with the girls mothers out of wedlock.

12. Creepy indeed
I have two daughters and the best thing I do is to treat my Wife/their Mother with respect and affection as well as treat them with respect and affection. I also try to make sure that I always show my son and daughters, as best I can, how to treat other people - with kindness, courtesy and respect.

The rest of the stuff they attach to their "balls" is fluff. Jesus himself would tell them that.

15. Plus the idea of a father "protecting his daughter's virginity" seems so middle ages and smacks of
seeing women as chattel to be traded with other men for economic gain.

16. A chastity pledge sounds like the kind of thing that ends either in incest or
an "honor killing".

19. If my husband did that, he would be looking for new accommodation
with instructions not to come back until his therapist pronounced him cured. Maybe not even then. Ugh.

21. Creepy as hell. How about having an open and frank relationship with your daughter...
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 02:06 PM by truebrit71
..you know, build up trust, explain things to her, listen to her problems - however small, encourage her to be open with you about her worries, her concerns, her plans and her dreams...

You know, REGULAR PARENTING shit....

This fundie stuff is just perverse...

23. Yeah well, the fundies are into "Daddy as head of the household", "Daddy as high priest." etc.
Not much room there for "open and frank relationships" with anyone, let alone a GIRL. They really are into OT patriarchal models. Since girls are mainly for breeding/child rearing purposes, their virginity must be protected until they can be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Harsh, but that's what it looks like to me.

22. To me it represents the part of fundie culture
where marriage/daughterhood is viewed as a master-slave relationship and marriage is the passage of ownership from the father to the husband
