I am struggling with what would be equal justice in the Jena La. case.
I agree that the idiots who hung the nooses from the tree on school grounds should not have just been suspended, they should have been prosecuted as well. I am not exactly sure what charges could and should have been brought, but there should have been some kind of legal ramifications brought bare for this act.
All that said, what would be equal justice for 6 other individuals who gang assaulted a single individual? I would say the charges that were originally brought were way out of line, I don't believe for one minute that their intentions were to kill this individual. I do think that some kind of charges 1st degree assault, or assault with intent to cause bodily harm are not over the top. This whole situation is a reminder of just how far we have yet to go.

1. I understand the kid who was assaulted was treated and released
and attended a school function that night. Clearly, attempted murder was not the case. Nor was the present, reduced charge of aggravated assault.

The attackers will probably bargain down to simple assault, which is what they should have been charged with in the first place. One has a history of assault and will likely face jail time. Justice should see to it that the others face only probation.

As for the racist punks who strung up the nooses, expulsion should have been what they faced, not suspension.

2. agreed.
Don't you love it, too, when the white folk of Jena, LA are interviewed and they tell "outsiders" to stay away and that they are not a racist community. It's like it's 40 years ago again! United States is moving backwards on race relations and has been for qutie some time.
