While everyone else is frothing about a newspaper ad....an 11 year old boy was tag-teamed by his mom
and her boyfriend. In my little town.

Brought to the ER with severe injuries.

They tag-teamed him and beat him to a bloody pulp.

An 11 year old. Jesus Christ.

The entire ER staff is broken up over it.

So, yeah...let's all weep and wail over some stupid fucking newspaper ad.

1. I'm sure you have a point there someplace.
There were a thousand tragedies like this today, perhaps 100,000. What is your point?

3. No point. I just feel terrible about a child getting his face smashed in by his mom.
All day, DU has been gnashing teeth over some stupid newspaper ad.

Meanwhile...real life, in all its sadness, goes on.

8. There are many aspects to social reality.
We have our day-to-day world with its little triumphs and tragedies. A colleague of mine at work dropped dead last week. Nobody here said a word, but in that little segment of my social reality that tragedy lingers. Here we deal with a much larger and broader social reality, a reality that is trying to deal with something as large as the collapse of human civilization on this planet, with catastrophic climate change, peak oil, resource wars, the failure of our political system. This is a public forum, a cacaphony of virtual soap boxes where a perhaps irrelevant or perhaps hugely important ongoing political discourse is carried out. I am sorry for your tragedy in your local social reality and I am dismayed by the events that went down in Washington today, and I am still having trouble accepting the loss of a friend at work.

2. And we're suppose to know what happened in your little town?
While my heart breaks for that little boy, you really have no right to belittle DUers for being pissed over the resolution vote today. It was a TRAVESTY!

I hope the little boy will be OK.

4. Oh for the love of Christ. Can you do ANYTHING but look for a flame-war?
Jesus christ.

I feel terribly bad about a kid who got his face smashed in.
And that is "belittling" to Duers HOW???

This entire message board has been consumed with a newspaper ad. Meanwhile...real life is getting played out right under our noses.

9. Me? looking for a flame war? You started this thread with INSULTS, not me.

You insinuate we should all know about what happened in your little town. Sorry. I don't get the news from your little town and like I said, I hope the little boy is OK. No child deserves that. I hope his parents go to jail for LIFE.

18. I already posted the 2 insulting quotes. You insulted any DUer that is outraged (frothing at the
mouth) over the horrendous resolution that the Democrats voted for today.

20. Actually, I am amazed that the nation's business was stopped today...to debate a newspaper ad.
It's not a personal insult to you.

It just amazed me...all this teeth gnashing over a newspaper ad.

Meanwhile....real life goes on. Really important things are happening.

21. I understand and I can only imagine how awful you felt when the story of that little boy
was reported, but what the Democrats and repukes did today was really pretty horrific....in the grand scheme of things. It was a major attack on FREE SPEECH in this country, so we all should be outraged. With that resolution they told us all to just sit down and shut up.

I know real life goes on and lately, not much of it is good.:(

13. It is just not about an Ad you know, its about a war where many many
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 09:49 PM by AuntPatsy
children are hurting just as much if not more so, granted it is in a country far from us but still, how can we not feel for them as well, this is about the war in Iraq, not a simple ad.

That is a horrific story, I realize you must be horrified by it but attacking durs is not the way to find relief from your pain for something they had no idea occurred.

I feel like your saying that we ignored this horrific tradegy by frothing about a newspaper ad

No one is really weeping or wailing over a newspaper ad, its much more than that, you must be absolutely heartbroken over this tradegy of that young boy, anyone who reads this account will be too but your op was a bit edgy and I don't know anyone who would be uncaring about such a tragic crime...

Its okay honestly, I am sorry I even said anything other than God help us all that monsters like those parents exist.

How can anyone do that to their own kid?
Even after all his sores heal, his soul will always be in pain.

14. Where does a child go...after his mother smashes his face in?
Who does he turn to?

Who can he talk to?

Who will help him?

I have an 11 year old son. The thought of him being brutally beaten is too much.

I feel the same way.
I have a daughter with special needs, and you always hear about those kids getting abused.
I cry for all of them. For all of the abused children.

I will never understand how one human being can hurt another.

23. No one...ever again. Poor kid.
The frustrating thing is, while we spend countless hours and billions of dollars on wasteful wars, there are REAL kids who are in real trouble.

I am so angry that I cried. And am still crying.

24. in my little town this week
a story broke about how a 9 year old kid and 11 year old kid forced a 7 year old kid to perform oral sex on at least one of them on the bus ride home from school. the video tape from the mandatory bus tapings is inconclusive - the bus seats are intentionally tall for reasons of safety. the alleged perpetrators are being tried, and if convicted will spend the rest of their lives on the sex offenders registry. all the parents of the children involved seem to be blaming the other children. the school board sent a little flyer home with the kids to let us parents know that everyone is shocked and saddened and that the safety of our children at school - and presumably on the school bus too - is a top priority. because those involved are minors not much information is available - i don't know if this happened on a bus my own child was riding on, i don't know if any of these students sit next to my child at school, i don't know for sure what the real meaning of the flyer i read that assures me that "staff and administration are focused upon counseling and support that students may need..."

like you, i am very concerned, disheartened, shocked, appalled, and broke up about what happened in my small town.

it did not prevent me from reading the news of the world today. it did not stop me from reading DU. it did not make it impossible for me to be upset about the vote in the senate regarding the moveon ad. i did not 'weep and wail" nor "froth" - but fucked up things are fucked up things whether local, national, or global.

horrifying, abhorrent, inconceivable things occur all over the world every single day. it hurts a little more and is easier to make an emotional investment when it happens next door. if being able to fix what happened in my small town or yours contained a universal answer, we wouldn't even need a place like DU. but it is actually more likely the reverse - we first need a universal answer so that we can fix what happened in my small town and yours.

there are so many things, Beausoir, to weep and wail about these days. my bleeding heart doesn't limit me - i can cry about the little one in your ER and still be outraged by the stupidity of the vote in the senate today.
