Woman Refuses To Return Sex Ed Book To Library...
LEWISTON, Maine -- A Lewiston woman who said she was "horrified" by the content of an acclaimed sex education book has checked out copies from two libraries and refuses to give them back.

JoAn Karkos made her feelings known in letters to the Lewiston and Auburn public libraries. Each letter was accompanied by a check for $20.95 to cover the cost of the book, "It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health."

In one letter, Karkos wrote, “I have been sufficiently horrified of the illustrations and sexually graphic, amoral, abnormal contents. I will not be returning the books.”

Thoughts??? I'm guessing she's pretty frigid.

I *would've* said "fucked up", but that woman clearly has never had a good fuck.

Poor lady. Very sad.

5. When I Was Younger I Used To Go To The Library To Check Out Books With Political Or Cultural Themes
One of the persons who checked out the book before me would make sarcastic comments in pencil below the text. He was obviously conservative. It was quite funny though , obviously , wrong...

Anybody else experience something like that...

7. Glad to know we have people that arbitrate what we read now.
And then she acts as if those books are hers to call shots with. Hey, asshole; THAT'S PRIVATE PROPERTY. Whether you think you paid for them or not, they're not your damned books and it still makes you a thief.

I wonder if she was with the GotEs on Saturday.

11. hopefully the libraries will use the $$ to replace the books, because
now young people will be flocking to the library to read it!
she couldn't have made it any more appealing to them than to say the contents are "graphic, amoral, abnormal." As a small-town naive teenager, I would have waited in a long line to get my hands on something like that ...

13. That sounds like a pretty good recommendation
if an uptight fundie hates it, it must be a good book to get my daughter in a few years when she has those kinds of questions. I bet it covers all the specific subjects she needs to know about, because those are the subjects fundies don't usually want discussed.

14. I think she's been writing reviews for Amazon.com
"This book is absolutely disgusting! Oh it'll teach your kids how to have sex alright! It will also teach them the "fun and friendly" way to masturbate have group sex and different sexual positions all in full color pictures!! It will teach them that they can have sex, whether normal or perverted, without any fear of consequences. But perhaps the worst atrocity of this book is that it teaches girls to abort their babies. It even gives nine 'perfectly normal' reasons why a girl should abort. Of course they fail to mention all of the consequences and after effects post-abortive women go through. Not to mention killing their own child. Please! Please! Do not subject your children to this piece of garbage!"

or

"Who would find it necessary to show a ten year old pictures of naked people, from infants to teens to old gray haired people? Why would they need to see a picture of a girl and a boy masturbating? Not only is this simply unnecessary, but when one considers that Planned Parenthood (who is the largest abortion provider) supports this work, it becomes obvious why the book spends no time talking about why not to have sex...but instead simply talks about how much fun it is and how good it feels. And of course it talks about 9 or so reasons a girl might decide to have an abortion. And abortions are perfectly safe, of course! Are the people of America so blind and ignorant that they cannot see behind this corporation's thinly veiled tricks? Do people crave to pretend that morality is a fable so much that they will ruin their children's lives? This is downright horrible.

"Oh yeah...they have pictures for EVERYTHING...except for the sections on STDs and abortion. Don't you think it would be more appropriate to show pictures of STDs rather than every other perverse picture they could imagine? And of course it suggests that it is "perfectly normal" for children to experiment with heterosexuality and homosexuality. Wow!"

On the other hand, it got many many 5 star reviews, including one titled "If they call it anti-Christian, it must be good!"

in charge of picking what other people are allowed to

I hope someone who can afford it purchases 10 copies of

that she went back and got another copy to keep at home ...

(maybe because she stained the first one?)

Gee, maybe we can organize a movement to get her to go bankrupt ... just have a leftie go in and donate a copy of the book ... different lefties each time ...

27. Christian radio has encouraged exactly this kind
of theft. Yes. I heard it on a co-worker's radio. (She listens exclusively to Christian radio). The featured minister was encouraging listeners to visit the local libray, find offensive books, check them out, and then not return the books.
Nice.

28. A fundie tactic
In the DC area a while back, fundies were checking books out of the public libraries without returning to keep them out of circulation. They too were willing to pay replacement fees. Though they're still fucking thieves.

32. Aah, but there is her problem: she assumes that the "cost" of replacement is retail.
What she fails to realize is that the book has to be tracked through Public Service as "lost," eating up time and precious magnetic domains. Next, Technical Services have to update the cataloguing twice -- once as lost, and purge it from the database (OPAC) and then once they replace it, to recatalogue the books and send it back to Public Services, Circulation Division, and get a new bar code/RFT put on it.

Why, it could take ALL WEEK! And her liable for all of the costs of the staff, from the director on down to the janitors. . . why I could imagine it taking even more time and money, what with the book out of circulation and the users getting requests through Interlibrary Loan, using up more precious magnetic media and time. . .

A creative librarian could get several grand out of her, easily! As well as having her photo put behind the circulation and reference desks alongside the "Public Masturbators" and "Toilet Floor Mystery Turd Leavers" that librarians love so much. . .
