FReeper post of the day!
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1782941/posts

The OP is about someone shooting wild horses in Alberta. Most of the posts are fairly docile, but near the bottom we get to this gem:

To: canuck_conservative
Better nip this in the bud, or else the estrogen crazed horses-uber-alles brigades will put enshrine these stupid pests in your national constitution and really wreck your range.

You should see the destruction left by "wild" horses in Nevada. We have over 50% of all "wild" horses in the western US in Nevada and they utter wreck the range, springs, trees, you name it. The "wild horse Annie" types will hear of no sound management proposals, thinking that these creatures are "threatened." What the WHOA types never tell you is that "wild" horses have almost no predators (other than mountain lions in high country) and left unchecked, their herd size will increase 17 to 21% every year until they encounter a hard winter or starve themselves in population collapse. By the time the latter option has happened, everything else on the range is starving too.

Then when the WHOA types start seeing how they horses starve, they'll saddle you with paying for round-ups and adoption centers. And for the horses that people won't adopt (which is the vast majority of horse gathered off the range), they'll force you to create "refuges" where the government pays private operators to graze the stupid beasts, with vets caring for them, year after year after year, at a cost of over $3/head/day.

I'm warning you: get on top of this fast, or otherwise you'll see the biggest flap and stupid tax-funded programs to care for these stupid creatures that you've ever seen, because politicians are too cowardly to tell a bunch of weepy-eyed women to "shut up, grow up and sit down."

The wild horse situation in Nevada is my "Exhibit #1" on why the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was our single biggest mistake as a nation.

3. All you need to see is someone calling horses "stupid pests"
to know that you are dealing with a complete idiot.

You cannot love anything if you do not love Nature and the beautiful animals.

5. I'm surprised
I would expect freepers to dislike women, laugh at conservation, and take a dim view towards animal protection legislation but I would have thought there would be an exception there for horses. Horses and dogs, really. While I doubt you'd get a freeper up in arms over whale hunting, you'd think they'd be upset over horse slaughter or butchering dogs for meat. So guess I was wrong about that supposition.

8. Freepers are a short-sighted and compassion-less lot.
They think Jesus gave us America so we could rape the landscape, become rich, and then be "raptured."

Like Bush said, "who cares, we'll all be dead!"

That reflects their mentality.

6. he's right about a couple things, tho...
because horses are not indiginous to north america, there are no real predators for them, either- and the ARE destructive. wild herds DO need to be managed.

7. Suffice it to say ...
"management" implies a bit more than "kill them."

It is humans who need managed in their continued destruction of habitat for other species.

13. that's not going to happen, though...
until the other species start putting up more of a fuss.

the blame for human destruction of other species habitats can be laid directly a the feet of all the humans who insist on procreating, thereby increasing the number of people on this already overcrowded planet.

my wife and i have made the conscious choice not to have children, as the alternative seems incredibly selfish, considering the number of people already taxing the earth's resources.

Let's follow their model.

Oh yeh, while we're at it, let's steal their ideas on health care too !

:hi:

on edit: My gf and I have made the same decision. For the betterment of the planet but also for selfish reasons. It is every couple's decision but the third baby is contributing to the problem of overpopulation. Not the baby's fault of course -they are just cute little bundles of joy. I wish babies could speak right out of the womb. Oh - the truth would hurt our ears!

24. I'll have to disagree.
Horses are indigenous to the US, but became extinct here and were then reintroduced.

However, all the horses in North America ultimately became extinct, approximately 11,000 years ago, perhaps due to climate change or some pandemic. It has also been suggested that humans hunted horses to extinction, as the appearance of humans in the Americas occurred at about the same time as the extinction of most large mammals in the Americas. However, there are no known kill sites of Pleistocene horses in North America, and so this scenario remains unsupported.

Edited on Sun Feb-11-07 03:58 PM by JHB
Actually, horses WERE indigenous to North America, but the native varieties died out along with most of the other megafauna (including their predators) about 10,000 years ago.

But on a practical level, you are correct, sir (or madame).

It looks like they cleaned up the thread, but here's a highlight:

"If I hated women, why would I want to own one?" FReeper "AgeOfReason" talking about his ownership of his wife and daughters, the evils of birth control and other crazy-ass shit.

PS To their credit even the FReepers mostly found this attitude objectionable.

21. Umm...
...any reasoning behind that statement? And the intelligence test thing has been tried, mainly as a way to disenfranchise the poor (many of whom were minorities) in the past. However, IF intelligence testing were reinstated, it's unlikely that Bush would have been elected at all...and you wouldn't want that, now, would you? :hi:

22. If only my mustang cross weren't so shy of people,
I'd send her after him. She is tough on cows, dogs, coyotes, and always the alpha of any herd she ends up in. She avoids people other than myself on principle, but she's never, in 18 years, even blinked aggressively at a human. I'd know; she moves coyotes off the pasture and cows off the trail with a glare.

I'd love to dress him up like a coyote and stick him out in her pasture, lol.

Of course, I tend to like animals better than many people, anyway.
