With the Baptismization of McCain--a thought about female clergy
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 10:42 AM by bunkerbuster1
Of course, the Episcopal church permits females to preach, as do a lot of mainline Proddy denominations. But not the Southern Baptist Conference, nor (of course) the Roman Catholic church.

you add those two humungous denominations, and add the Muslim and Jewish varieties that exempt women from leading services, and am I correct in imagining that fully half if not more Americans attend services that CAN'T be led by women?

Is that about right?

Pretty fucked up, huh?

Southern Baptists, Conservative Baptists and Primitive Baptists do not.

8. In the US, yes. Second only to the Roman Catholics
Worldwide, I'm not sure.

In the UK, for example, the more Liberal Baptists outnumber the Conservative ones.

And in the US, the SBC has long since hit their peak and is shrinking, with the American Baptists growing. I see this as a positive trend.

2. Bah. Religion is a tool used to
oppress women anyway.

But it's fucked that we can't preach. Like we have less to say about the word of dog than men.

Tell that to Joan of Arc.

Fuckers.

3. Catholics make up about 25% of the population, the largest single
denomination. Southern Baptists are significantly less, so I doubt that together with the other conservative churches the figure is fifty percent. It's signicant, though.

4. Baptists are autonomous....
they pass resolutions stating the general opinion...but, none of it is binding on the churches, who do what they want. There is no "allowing" or "disallowing" from the denomination. There are quite a few women pastors in Baptist churches...churches who have told the denomination to which they belong to STUFF IT.

6. So I have heard, but how many rebel SBC-affiliated churches have female pastors?
Can't be many.

7. More all the time.
Of course, some of those churches are dually affiliated with other, more progressive, Baptist groups, or have pulled from the SBC altogether.

Not to defend the SBC...I used to be one of them...they have been officially told by me, to kiss my rosy red ass.

9. Glad to hear of it.
Perhaps there's more support out there for women leaders than I'd been willing to recognize.

11. Fair point, although we keep being told that an overwhelming majority believe in God
although when I check the polling data, it seems about 40% nationwide claim to have attended church in the past week.

If you lump in the occasional-goers, it's probably a majority who attend services sometime during the year.
