Sally Field: "Good. I don't care".
Edited on Sun Sep-16-07 11:24 PM by Neecy
"Oh, well. I've been there before!" Sally Field just said back in the press room when asked what she thought of being censored on the Emmycast.

"Good. I don't care. I have no comment other than, 'Oh, well.' I said what I wanted to say. I wanted to pay homage to the mothers of the world. And I very very seriously think that if mothers ruled the world we wouldn't be sending our children off to be slaughtered."

When she was pressed for further comment, she added, "Too bad. That's a shame. And I think I probably shouldn't have said the 'god' in front of the 'damn.'

"If they bleep it, oh, well. I'll just say it somewhere else."

11. more from TV Week...
http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/james-hibberd/2007/09/sally_field_at_the_emmys.php

“I wanted to say something about the mothers who wait for their military children to come home from harm's way,” she said backstage. “I said at the end that if mothers ruled the world, there would be no wars."

7. Fox was clearly censoring her as they are capable of....
bleeping out the word, "Goddamn," and still leave the rest of the statement intact.

Between this and the fact that Fox didn't "bother" to broadcast the Democratic response to Chimpy's last speech, I'm thinking of boycotting everything they own, not just Fox Noise.

They are using our public airwaves! They have no right to censor anything, simply because it doesn't fit their political ideology!

Good for Sally, it sounds like she handled it very well. However, I'm really pissed off. :grr: :nuke:

87. Fox News should have it's license revoked...
For violating the public trust. They should lose their license
for broadcasting lies, disinformation and propaganda. The
airways are a public trust that they continuously violate.
Freedom of speech does not give you the right to yell fire;
nor does it give Fox the right to yell war.

Ghandi was Prime Minister in 1971 when India was at war with Pakistan. And while Thatcher and Meir didn't start wars the Yom Kippur and Falkands conflicts most certainly count as wars.

60. This ridiculous notion that women
are pure and innocent and men are bad and evil is a childish creation of ideological feminism. Women, like men, are both good and evil, pure and impure, violent and passive.

The flip side is how many women would have been raped, killed and wounded if the men who had protected them and given up their lives were not there.

It aint that simple.

78. A very important point,
made simply and succinctly!

It might sound flippant, but as a teacher I would rather deal with a run-of-the-mill boy fight than a girl fight any day. The guys seem to cool off the moment they get separated (too bad the world doesn't work like that), but the girls nurture lingering hatred like a cellar of fine new amontillado. And for the most stupid shit (e.g., one doesn't like the boy that the other is getting email from...this can lead to Girl World War III)

doesn't the myth's creation predate feminism by several thousand years? Chivalric epics of damsels in distress, angelic women beset by brutish men. But the important thing is that you made the point.

99. No disagreement from me at all
but we cannot neglect the mythology from matriarchal cultures that were very much aware of the negative feminine as well as the positive and did not show the fantasitical naivate of many feminists who subscribe to a simple, black/white, childish view of the sexes instead of seeing the complexities of gender.

I didn't know it was about the war until I got on here. Well, if she says she didn't care that is her opinion. But me, I be down right pissed off. Many shows like 24, Prison Break (which is a show I like), have said Goddamn before. Why is this any different? Answer, it was about the war mention. My conclusion: it was definitively political censorship.

46. Those three pictures kind of show a spirit advancing, don't they?
From a passive but insistent nun, to a teenager with a mildly rebellious spirit, to a fierce union supporter (remember unions? Remember wages and benefits? Remember America?) this little photo collage tells a story, and about more than her career.

I'm even beginning to like that effete little soap opera she does on ABC, Brothers and Sisters, where she plays a stern but loveable rich man's widow.

32. Why watch FOX?
If no one watches, they have no power to do this. If no one watches, the Emmys will be moved to another network. To me, the questionable value of viewing the Emmys is far outweighed by the undoubted value of never turning on FOX again. I know it's hard. I hate missing football games. But I hate FOX more.

We have the power to take FOX right out of the picture. If no one watched, they would not be a powerful network, no matter what they own. Why support these enemies of democracy?

Friends don't let friends watch fascist FOX.

Sally rocks! She shouldn't have to appear on FOX to accept her award.

85. Preliminary reports are showing that last night's Emmy's got their
lowest rating ever - 13.1 million. The previous low was in 2004 with 13.6 (?) million.

Of course, they are putting a chunk of that blame on the fact that it went up against Sun. Night Football for the first time ever.

I don't care if they bleep out a bad word now and then, but this was a total hatchet-job - and not just on Sally. Keep this up and they'll lose even more viewers.

the war loving men always bring their gods into the picture.

thank you Sally, we WILL keep on saying it.

the word I would have changed is 'ruled'. I think we women would rather 'manage/nurture' the world. 'ruling over' should go the way of the dinosaur.

37. In my area not a single station carried more than a few
minutes of Emmy coverage. I had to come here to DU verify that I had indeed watched a blatant act of censorship on behalf of Fox at the Emmy's. If she had said that the commander guy was to be obeyed by sending our children to be sacrificed to fight terror, the message would have remained on air.

I will be advising Fox that not only do I seldom watch any of their corny programming anyway, I now vow to watch nothing that is put out by them, on all their channels and any of their movies. We can't have a fascist, corporate takeover of everything in our lives just because they hold the camera and microphone for their propaganda uses.

50. Indeed! If she said "We've got to get all those God damned terrorists"
It would not only have passed the censors, Faux News would have replayed it 24/7 for a week, amid raves from their talking heads.

40. Why Should Anyone Be Surprised
It would have made too much sense for Faux to bleep "god damn" and leave the word war alone. One thing they accomplished and probably didn't mean to is that everyone is talking about her acceptance speech. By censorship they managed to bring her speech front and center.

On a side note-what a bunch of pricks.

41. They didn't censor it for the "god damn"
They censored it because it was an anti-war statement.

This is Faux Noise we're talking about.

44. BRAVA, Sally!
She's a role model for other celebs who might wish to speak their minds but hold back out of fear.

Don't be afraid to speak out if you are so moved, celebrities! You have a ready-made audience that wants to know your views.... SPEAK OUT!

I also loved what the Sopranos creator said at the end of his speech about the country being run by a bunch of gangsters.

90. The Obama campaign has sally field post
the Nevada blog has a post about sally field...!

http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post_group/NVHQ/CWnL

Form the post:
During Last Night's Mock Caucus at the Teamsters Union Hall, One of our Intern Organizers, Christine, was photographed holding up a sign for one of the dishes. Her likeness to a role played by Sally Field in the movie "Norma Rae" was uncanny. Let us know if you agree."

I found this when searching for Sally Field Info-- very funny stuff

101. She's sorta half-right.
I'm glad that she promises to keep propounding her message, but can't help being suspicious of her giving Fox a pass. How soon is she likely to be on TV as herself, after all? Denouncing the network's censorship would show even more courage.
