Thompson seems to be the "Heir Apparent" - the sort of guy that the Bush Family Evil Empire would like to have in office next. It could've been Chuck Hagel - he has had a long-standing relationship with Poppy, but his opposition to the Iraq occupation has blown his chances of being carried into the Oval Office on the shoulders of the minions.
