Revolt at the Pentagon?....
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2007_09/012042.php

Michael Hirsh tells us that a significant faction within the Pentagon wants to withdraw from Iraq considerably more quickly than Gen. Petraeus:

Newsweek has learned that a separate internal report being prepared by a Pentagon working group will "differ substantially" from Petraeus's recommendations, according to an official who is privy to the ongoing discussions but would speak about them only on condition of anonymity. An early version of the report, which is currently being drafted and is expected to be completed by the beginning of next year, will "recommend a very rapid reduction in American forces: as much as two-thirds of the existing force very quickly, while keeping the remainder there." The strategy will involve unwinding the still large U.S. presence in big forward operation bases and putting smaller teams in outposts. "

The link is to a blog, not Newsweek. . But I will be looking for more

1. There has been
talk of a significant group within the Pentagon that disagrees strongly with General Petraeus on the issues involving the military and its role in Iraq. This is one reason why those who have attempted to say that when democrats/DUers take a stance that is strongly opposed to the General that it is an insult to our military are wrong. It's not the only reason that they are wrong, but it is an important one.

9. so - would the 'retired Generals' maybe be a former part of this group?
Why is the media not noting that, once these Generals retire, they sing a vastly different tune on Iraq and the Armed Forces?

Maybe you have a better read on the guy than I do, but we're not seeing him anywhere near this "report"...no photo-ops with Petreus or even any statement of support. Makes one go hmmmm...

Cheers...

The General as Salesman
Not surprisingly, Petraeus performed smoothly in his testimony to Congress. But an internal Pentagon report is expected to 'differ substantially' from his recommendations on withdrawal from Iraq, NEWSWEEK has learned.

8. The WJ host read off a mention in the NYT that Petraeus is polling
higher than Congress or the President. As if that's some kind of achievement.

11. only 70% mistrust him.
compared to 84% mistrusting congress and 75% mistrusting the president.

And each and every one of them has earned that rating.

4. They've gotten out if front of us. Dems looks weak and ineffective
Because we ARE weak and ineffective. When this all finally comes crashing down, we shouldn't be surprised to find ourselves on the outside looking in -- again -- as the Republicans take credit for accomplishing that which our own party leaders could not.
