Group calls off Bardstown funeral protest

The Westboro Baptist Church will not protest at today's funeral for 10 people who perished in a Bardstown house fire this week.

Radio station WLRS, which broadcasts on 104.3 and 105.1 FM in Louisville, let one of Westboro's members air the church's views of an angry God from 3 to 4 p.m. yesterday in exchange for canceling the protest.

Asked if she felt the church would reach more people by going on the air rather than holding signs outside the funeral, Phelps-Roper said she believes it's a wash.

snip

Mo let Phelps-Roper cite biblical examples supporting the group's beliefs about gays, questioned her, then gave his own viewpoint.

snip

"There are extremists in every religion," Mo said in an interview later. "What we just heard was a Christian extremist."

I have a dream: Fred Phelps is about 78. He'll die someday as we all do, but given his age, I'll probably live to read his obituary; protestors will show up to object to his funeral, and Mother Earth will reject his body. Hey, I can dream...

4. My fantasy has been
to surround their entire complex with one, big Gay Pride flag. And then, if he's buried in a public cemetery, each day stick a Gay Pride flag in his plot.

10. That's a good fantasy.
I wish it was possible to somehow get control of his financial assets and donate everything to various GLBT groups.

13. I held a counter-demonstration once when the Phelps clan
came to Brooklyn.

In March of 2002 they staged a protest at the FDNY headquarters in downtown Brooklyn, since 9/11 was God's punishment for a "fag infested FDNY". Instead of just showing-up and screaming at them, I organized a silent, non-confrontational counter-demonstration and got people to donate x amount of dollars for every minute they were there. I raised about $1500 that I donated to a GLBT group. I encourage anyone who has the displeasure of having to counter their hate to organize and do the same thing.

6. I think this is a far better solution.
EVERY bit of public exposure these hateful loons get is
a a GOOD thing for anyone who opposes them. The more people
see them, the more people oppose them.

Keeping that exposure from inflicting pain upon families
mourning their loved ones is even better.

12. Oh, believe me, I don't blame the DJ for making the offer, and in the
end, he did a good job of exposing them for what they are.

This Phelps character is one sick bastard.

9. I'd rather they get airtime than protest at funerals!
If they want to spread their message of hatred far and wide, let 'em! There's already hatred in the world, even some more virulent and irrational than theirs.

But to take their evil and hatred to funerals is beyond what most human beings can understand.

Let 'em get airtime. They're like Rush and Dr. Laura. They barf hatred over two groups of people: those who listen because they agree, and those who listen for laughs or because they know they'll be left with their mouths hanging open in disbelief. If those people are willing to be barfed on, so be it. It's better than mourners being barfed on.

11. I totally agree, yet Phelps wins in either case, unfortunately.
There's a heavy karma bill waiting for this sicko.

16. I'd rather they keep protesting at funerals
as long as that group who claimed they would assault "funeral protestors" were notified of the when and where of their intentions ...

15. I read recently that the group
has gone from protesting at soldiers' funerals to just protesting at any and all funerals. Seems KY passed a law that forbid the protesting at funerals, but the law was struck down by a higher court. (free speech issue?) RW sites blamed the ACLU, of course.

17. Elmer Gantry lives!
he ( Burt Lancaster) did the same thing in the film which was on last night. exchanged a week of radio sermonizing
for an article he and preacher lady objected to. (forgot the name of the woman's character.

Screening "Elmer Gantry" for Phelps and having him watch ALL Of It.
