McDonalds Employee Jailed..Too much salt on cop's burger!
McDonald's employee jailed, accused of over salting burger
Sept. 9, 2007 11:44 AM

UNION CITY, Ga. (AP) - A McDonald's employee spent a night in jail and is facing criminal charges because a police officer's burger was too salty, so salty that he says it made him sick.

Kendra Bull was arrested Friday, charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and freed on $1,000 bail.

Bull, 20, said she accidentally spilled salt on hamburger meat and told her supervisor and a co-worker, who "tried to thump the salt off."

On her break, she ate a burger made with the salty meat. "It didn't make me sick," Bull told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

But then Police Officer Wendell Adams got a burger made with the oversalted meat, and he returned a short time later and told the manager it made him sick.

Bull admitted spilling salt on the meat, and Adams took her outside and questioned her, she said.

"If it was too salty, why did (Adams) not take one bite and throw it away?" said Bull, who has worked at the restaurant for five months. She said she didn't know a police officer got one of the salty burgers because she couldn't see the drive-through window from her work area.

Police said samples of the burger were sent to the state crime lab for tests.

City public information officer George Louth said Bull was charged because she served the burger "without regards to the well-being of anyone who might consume it."

8. Joking aside, charges may be justified here.
Many people have a sensitivity to salt, and overconsumption of salt can cause increased blood pressure (a real problem if they have BP issues in the first place). All fast food restaurants publish nutritional data for their meals, and it is the responsibility of each restaurant to ensure they are preparing meals in accordance with those guidelines. If someone comes in knowing that they can eat a burger with 2g of salt inside, order a burger with 1.5g of salt from the menu, and it's delivered with 5g of salt, who is responsible for the health problems that follow?

Or lets take salt off the table entirely. If you order a hamburger from a restaurant, and the chef knowingly drips shrimp juice on it and triggers a lethal shellfish allergic reaction in a diner, shouldn't they be held responsible?

It is the responsibility of the food preparer to ensure that he or she is serving food that isn't going to sicken or kill someone. Once these patties were spoiled with salt, they should have been thrown away. If the manager wouldn't permit that, then the manager should be charged.

10. Criminal charges? Are you serious?
Edited on Mon Sep-10-07 01:10 AM by me b zola
If a person is serious about their health or has serious health problems they shouldn't be eating at McDonalds to begin with--that shit will kill you. Never the less, I suggest that if a person were to get a burger or frys that was excessively salted I would suggest they stop eating it and return it.

Why should some poor schumck working for minimum wage be criminally liable for people who insist on eating that shit, heavily salted or not?

38. For people with food allergies, McDonalds isn't a bad place...
1. They're everywhere
2. Their food is supposed to be consistent
3. They do publish nutritional and allergen guidelines.

Yes, the quality of the food is bad, but when you're travelling with a 10 year old with Celiac disease, knowing that you can get gluten-free fries and a hamburger patty on almost any streetcorner is a good thing.

That said, if I was expecting a gluten-free hamburger patty, but got one that had bread crumbs spilled on it, then I would have one very sick little girl on my hands.

Criminal charges may be over the top, but it's not unreasonable to expect the food that you're ordering to be the food that you think you're getting.

The "salted" product should have been thrown out.

Sid

but I read where she went to the manager. and his/her answer was to try and "thump" the salt off the meat.

So she went to the manager before the meat was cooked. the hamburgers were stil served. Why isn't the manager also in jail?

84. Quite
Why should some poor schumck working for minimum wage be criminally liable for people who insist on eating that shit, heavily salted or not?

Any person, working in any job, should be held criminally liable if they knowingly place other people at risk. She knew the patty was oversalted, and she knew it wasn't supposed to be served that way. By serving it anyway, she made herself liable, both legally and ethically.

Again, take the salt out of the equation. What if she had served the burger on a bun that she'd accidentally sprayed with drain cleaner a few minutes before? Should her low pay rate exampt her from prosecution? Of course not...if she served food that she KNEW was improperly prepared or was unsafe, then she should be held liable.

24. Oh, for fuck's sake
Here's how these things are handled 99.99% of the time:

1) Bite into burger.

2) Realize it's too salty.

3) Take it back to the counter and ask for a new burger / money back.

4) Receive new burger / money back, usually with apology from the manager.

Note that at no time during this process is an arrest involved.

43. Did everyone involved in processing beef contaminated with e-coli
that killed some diners not long ago get arrested?

Not being a smart ass here, just curious if it is really about serving food which may be dangerous so some sensitive people or if it is more about cops who have reason to question what they are being served?

Who all gets held responsible when a known toxin gets in with the food and how high up the corporate ladder does accountability go?

Yes, if this beef was too salty, and the manager was told about the accident in prep, the manager should be explaining the situation and taking the responsibility for the problem

85. Knowingly vs. unknowingly.
In this case, she knew the meat contained improper ingredients, and she served it anyway.

In the case of the e. coli food workers, they didn't know that the meat was tainted until after it had been shipped. If they DID know that there was e. coli in the food, and they packed & shipped it anyway, then yes, I would advocate prosecution.

69. A Quarter pounder with cheese has 1190 mg of sodium
Big Mac 1040 mg

Basically each one has at or near the equivalent of 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to begin with.

A healthy low sodium diet usually contains no more than 1500 mg of sodium per day. This is usually broken down in three meals that contain no more than 500 mg.

Which is why people with sensitivity to sodium are advised not to eat fast food burgers. It is assumed that they do contain too much sodium to begin with.

I'm on a low sodium diet for medical reasons and this is how it was explained to me initially by my doctor.

But all that is neither here nor there in this case. This officer will have to prove that actual damage was done above the usual damage that comes from eating a McDonald's burger. Since it's expected to have somewhat high levels of sodium to begin with it's not the same thing as if a person allergic to seafood or peanuts were to be exposed to a food product that isn't supposed to contain any of those things. He'll also have to explain why he continued to eat the burger after it tasted too salty to him.

73. First of all, if you're going to Mickie D's for a burger, you're not worried about your BP
Secondly, if the cop takes a bite of the burger, the normal thing to do is take it back and get a fresh one. I've taken food back to the counter before and have had no problem, a cop would have even less.

Third, an accident like this is not grounds for arrest. What are they going to charge this person with?

Sorry, but this whole deal is bullshit from the word go.

WOP will be the war to end all wars. Once the world is rid of the evil of pepper then we will all be free to enjoy bland food and the world will know the joys of true democracy.

In the meantime, I hear Rachel Ray is on the terrorist watch list for her subversive use of both salt and pepper.

A cook at McDonalds in Union City, Georgia was arrested and charged with reckless conduct after a "salty" hamburger was sold to a white Union City police officer.

The officer came threw the drive thru, placed his order, received his order and left. He came back later and accused the cook, a black female, of over salting his food. He then radioed for backup and arrested the cook. The cook, Kendra Bull, told Fox 5 Atlanta that she over salted some of the meat by accident, but believes that the police officer went way too far by arresting her...

79. And, it appears, it was a free burger.
Gratis:

For McDonald's staffer Kendra Bull, Adams' lunch also came with a price.

Adams is the Union City patrolman who got sick on an overly salty burger at a McDonald's on Jonesboro Road in his city. Bull, who said she accidently doused the officer's burger with salt, was charged with a reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, for her role in the food preparation.

The 20-year-old noted that while Adams got his meal free which she says is customary for police at her restaurant — and is back at work, she's out of a paycheck and spent a night in jail before getting out on a $1,000 bond.

All because of what she calls a big accident...

I remember reading a story about some kid getting arrested for dumping a bunch of salt on, IIRC, a sub sandwich prepared for a cop...... In this case, the kid admitted to the "prank."

The cops I know wouldn't dare eat fast food that can't see while it's being made. I always think of that scene in the movie "Casino" when a cop picks up carry-out food at Joe Pesci's restaurant - Pesci loads the sandwiches up with spit before he brings them out to the cop.

35. Here is an article on the subject....

http://www.careerjournal.com/myc/officelife/20010607-ordonez.html

Hours into a long Sunday shift, Chris T. Phillips, a North Carolina highway patrolman, was looking forward to his order of Taco Bell nachos. Pulling away from the drive-through window, he shoveled into his mouth a mound of meat and cheese. Then, he noticed something.

"It was clear and slimy in appearance," Sgt. Phillips recalls.

Dangling from a chip, state lab tests later confirmed, was phlegm. Sgt. Phillips said that an employee who was fired after the incident had complained of being harassed by police about his skateboarding. Amy Sherwood, spokesman for Tricon Global Restaurants, which owns Taco Bell, declines to comment other than to say the company "has the highest admiration and respect for the work of police officers," who are always welcome to eat at its restaurants.

Now, nearly four years later

41. Cops like these.....
Cops like these are the exact reason there is such a mistrust for police. It doesn't matter if there are 10 cops who act ethically and within the bounds of authority for every 1 cop like this, it's always the one raging powerhungry a-hole that spoils the bunch. Sad, sad. I hope someone gets fired and someone else gets a nice lawsuit recovery out of this.

52. 10 to 1
I get the feeling you live somewhere I've never been,or you
haven't had the pleasure of actually dealing with 10 police in
your lifetime."To Protect and Serve",has never been
the mindset of 9 out of 10 police that I have ever known.Forty
years ago it might have been 50/50.Now police are paramilitary
operations with a mindset that the general population are
enemy combatants.I used to wonder where Hitler found so many
sick personalities willing to abuse their fellow man until I
had the unfortunate oppurtunity to meet their present day
counterparts via a short stay in county jail. There are far too
many like this officer and far too many willing to think that
a badge and a uniform somehow equates to elevated principles.

53. Elevated principles -- well said.
I do have a lot of respect for cops, but as in any group you will run across your share of assholes.

What happened, did the patty fall into the fry bin? Their fries are so damn salty. Why don't they just call it what it is McSalt Lick.

46. I almost choked when I saw this in our paper this AM!
First, MickeyD's burgers are still frozen up to the time they are cooked. It shouldn't take much effort to "thump" the salt OFF! Second, the cop SHOULD HAVE TASTED the extra salt IF IT WAS REALLY STILL THERE and just returned the damn burger!

I have to believe they're having a jolly time at the crime lab this morning on this one!!!!

49. When you buy stuff from McDonalds, aren't you automatically accepting it's inedible?
Or, at the very least, that it isn't really food?

I understand the practice, though, having worked as a convenience store clerk.

Do we think the McD's employees are much more empowered than you were?

63. Huh?
Do you mean was I able to stop serving salt-laden meat to cops? We didn't do that at the convenience store I worked at. We just gave them free coffee and drinks because our cheap-ass owners wouldn't put in security cameras.

68. So in other words you continued to pay off the cops.

It's okay. We've all been powerless.

But see my post below about what free drinks can turn into. (post #54)

(BTW-it was a lowly Dry Cleaner who eventually got this Providence cop kicked out.)

I don't know what you think you're responding to, but I'm pretty sure I didn't say it. I would check your other post, but I don't really care that much. Why don't you re-read what I really posted and come back when you understand it.

51. McDonalds has 'cooks'?
Seriously, as a person who suffers from hypertension and has to restrict salt intake, I think I can sense a dangerous amount of salt before I have too much of it. Something else is a-goin' on here...

60. Yeah I have hypertension too.
I have to restrict my salt intake and I don't like it anyway.

Then some girl on line got MAD at me when she sent me one of those videos that looks normal, but in the middle of it you see a human ghoul and hear a blood curdling scream!!!

Well, it made me jump out of my chair. The girl that sent me this, well I told her to F.O.A.D. and she was horrified after she googled that phrase!!

I told her I had high blood pressure, and that that kind of shit was NOT funny! It would screw up my BP seriously!!! I can't even wake up to a regular alarm clock buzzer that startles me, because it makes my BP skyrocket. And she just couldn't understand why I was upset over that video. Maybe if she was old enough to have high BP and a seriously bad startle reflex, she'd understand.

"The police officer said that after he ate the burger, he nearly threw up. Bull wonders why the officer didn't he throw it away after taking a bite? By the way, the McDonald's gives free meals to the police who eat there"

54. The Officer should be arrested for taking a BRIBE. And the McD's should be arrested too.

Read the last few lines of this...

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/09/10/woman-jailed-for-ser.html

"Asked why someone would try and salvage the burger, Bull said she wasn't sure.

"They've been saying we've been wasting too much meat," she said.

The police officer said that after he ate the burger, he nearly threw up. Bull wonders why the officer didn't he throw it away after taking a bite? By the way, the McDonald's gives free meals to the police who eat there. Lots of articles here"

This McD's has been PAYING OFF COPS WITH FOOD!

Officer Pigout didn't like his bribe!!

BTW - for all the people who are going to say this is just about food, i challenge you with this. In 1993 on the East side of Providence at the Corner of Hope and Rochambeau, I yelled at a Quickie Mart guy for giving free fountain soda to a cop.

In 2006 that SAME COP was found to be shaking down 35+ local businesses for free stuff including food , dry cleaning, kegs, Gas, tires for his truck, a funeral, tanning (even though he was asian), the list goes on and on.....

64. cops do have a right to be paranoid
Cops have had their restaurant food spat on or contaminated with glass or other noxious substances. And yes, there have been cases where restaurant workers have confessed to doing so out of hatred towards the police. I don't know if the charges were justified in this case, but you can understand why cops might be quick to assume the worst.

71. Cops who actually PAY for food have nothing to fear. This one was using the McD's for Free bribes

A bribe is a bribe even if it is a Big Mac.

This all makes sense when you realize the Cops were the ones in the wrong by demanding free food.

After that it all adds up.

70. Because she was being leaned on by the management.
http://www.boingboing.net/2007/09/10/woman-jailed-for-ser.html

"The supervisor acknowledged the salt, she said, but still put the patty on the officer's bun, Bull said. The supervisor denied Bull's account when questioned by police.

Asked why someone would try and salvage the burger, Bull said she wasn't sure.

"They've been saying we've been wasting too much meat," she said."

Management didn't go to jail though because this is America and only the little guy goes to jail.

81. I will never eat at McDonalds again
Edited on Mon Sep-10-07 05:11 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
I really don't eat there now, or at any other fast food places due to sanitary concerns...

But between their back to back patronizing commercials geared towards black Americans and Americans in general (contributing heavily to the obesity problem in this country) and now THIS... :eyes: They threw the young single mother under the bus and took no responsibility for their actions. This is an absolute TRAVESTY.

ETA: That cop needs to be fired, ASAP

82. I'm so mad I could spit nails.
I just emailed the Governor of Georgia, Gov. Perdue. Told him that every frivolous arrest, every undu use of force would ultimately decrease the effective of police.

I also told him that an incident like this would most certainly cast an extremely bad light on Georgia in the eyes of the nation and of the world. I advised him that this story is all over the internet now.

Will he listen?

There didn't seem to be any email addresses at the Union City municipal level.
