On Saturday, not a full day after he secretly tendered his resignation to President Bush, Gonzales joined other "loyal Bushies" (to quote a famous phrase of Gonzalez's former chief of staff) for a round of golf at the tony Chevy Chase Club.
Gonzales went as the guest of longtime Bushie Clay Johnson, the deputy director for management at the Office of Management and Budget. The connection between Johnson and Gonzales dates back to the president's time in Austin: Johnson, a member of the Chevy Chase Club, was Gov. Bush's chief of staff when Gonzales was top counsel to the governor and future president.
Just minutes after news broke that Gonzales was stepping down, a breathless loyal Sleuthie called to report that the AG was spotted playing golf Saturday with Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at the exclusive club in Chevy Chase, Md.
