BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 26 minutes ago
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A Rio Rancho police officer who crashed his motorcycle Monday while riding in a motorcade for President Bush's visit to Albuquerque was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

Trish Hoffman, a spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said the officer's name was being withheld until family members could be notified about this death.

Hoffman said the officer had been with the Rio Rancho police department since 2005 and worked with campus police at the University of New Mexico before that.

The officer had a wife and two teenage children, she said.

As for the crash, Hoffman said "it's way too soon" to say what the cause was.

The crash occurred where the road at the airport goes into an underground parking garage, she said. Traffic was shut down after the crash, resulting in a bottleneck at the airport. Bush was in Albuquerque Monday morning for a fundraiser for Republican Sen. Pete Dominici before flying to Washington state later in the day.

Second motorcade crash
A Honolulu police officer, Steve Favela, died when his motorcycle crashed while he was part of a presidential motorcade traveling across Hickam Air Force Base last November.

In February 2006, a Bernalillo police officer was injured when his motorcycle went down while he was helping escort Bush's motorcade on Interstate 25. Sgt. Jerry Nixon suffered a broken nose, cuts and bruises.

8. What I was thinking about was this:
"In February 2006, a Bernalillo police officer was injured when his motorcycle went down while he was helping escort Bush's motorcade on Interstate 25. Sgt. Jerry Nixon suffered a broken nose, cuts and bruises." That guy lived.

The bike thing was in the U.K. the cop was pretty badly hurt as I recall.

24. I was fixated on this bike thing, here
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-07/27/content_351960.htm

On May 22, he lost traction on a dirt road, scraping his chin, upper lip, nose, right hand and both knees. The next day, a Secret Service agent riding behind him slammed onto the ground at high speed on a paved section, breaking his collarbone and three ribs.

Bush approaches steep downhills warily.

In the moments before Monday's crash, he warns his riding party of a sharp drop and a hard left turn ahead.

"I'm gonna show you a hill that would choke a mule," he says.

He hits the brakes and is steadily advancing downhill when his front tire loses its grip amid the loose rocks. His foot gets stuck in a strap that keeps it on the pedal.

In the blink of an eye, his rear wheel is in the air, and Bush is flying high over the handlebars, landing on his back with the bike on top of him.

He lies motionless for a few moments. The reporter hoists the bike off him just as his medics arrive to attend to him.

There are trees and a drop-off nearby, and the road is littered with rocks, but Bush is uninjured.

A reflector has snapped off the bike. He leaves it as a warning marker for next time. Bush straightens out his handlebars, throws a leg over the bike and keeps rolling.

"We've got thrills, spills ¡ª you name it," he says.

The business where he ran the Secret Service guy off the mountain (and scraped himself up in the process) was a mountain bike accident. That may have been the third one...

or, on edit--this one (no death, just cuts, scrapes, and bruises as well):

Just the perfect place for no witnesses or helicopters to see what actually happened. Just a coincidence I'm sure, especially since this is the SECOND such "accident".

So did this happen in Albuquerque during the day today? Because he was in the Seattle area this afternoon. And they showed a clip of him on TV joking around and trying to be his funny frat boy self with Matt Hasselback and Shawn Alexander of the Seattle Seahawks.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A police officer died Monday after crashing his motorcycle while riding in a motorcade as President Bush prepared to leave the city following a fundraiser for Sen. Pete Domenici.

Rio Rancho Officer Germaine Casey, 40, was rushed to an Albuquerque hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The motorcycle was near the front of the motorcade, and the president saw the wreck as he drove past on the way to the airport, said Rio Rancho Police Department spokesman Officer John Francis.

Bush issued a statement saying he was saddened by Casey's death and extraordinarily grateful for his protection.

"It is a high calling to choose to serve and protect your fellow citizens, and I will always be indebted to Officer Casey's service," the president said, adding that the officer's wife and two teenage children were in his thoughts and prayers.

Francis said Casey's motorcycle hit a curb and then a tree, but investigators were reconstructing the accident to determine exactly what happened.

"Any time there is a presidential motorcade, the officers, that's part of their job, they drive at a high rate of speed," said Trish Hoffman, a spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Police Department, the agency that is investigating the crash.

Officer received special training
Francis said Casey had received special training in riding in motorcades and had previously escorted Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on separate occasions.

Casey had been with the Rio Rancho Police Department since 2005 and worked with campus police at the University of New Mexico before that.

Francis said Casey, who he described as easygoing, fun-loving and always smiling, will be missed by many officers. The department has made counselors available.

"They're handling it the best they can," Francis said of his fellow officers.

Domenici, R-N.M., said in a statement that he was deeply saddened to learn about Casey's death.

"The thoughts and prayers of my wife Nancy and I are with his family during this dark time and we offer them our most sincere condolences," the senator said.

The crash occurred where the road at the airport goes into an underground parking garage. Traffic was shut down after the crash, resulting in a bottleneck at the airport.

Photographers and reporters in the presidential motorcade said the officer's motorcycle appeared to be nearly destroyed, and the officer was on the ground, being helped by an emergency medical technician.
