The legal showdown anticipated for almost two years between the federal government and Geoffrey Fieger, the high-profile attorney who became a household name in Michigan, is on.
A federal grand jury in Detroit, in an indictment unsealed Friday, charged Fieger and law partner Vernon Johnson with making $127,000 in illegal campaign contributions to the 2004 presidential campaign of former Sen. John Edwards in violation of the $2,000 limit on individual donations.
The indictment accuses them of soliciting 60 straw donors to also contribute the $2,000 maximum to Edwards and then reimbursing them for their contributions through funds from their Fieger, Fieger, Kenney & Johnson PC firm.
Fieger faces jail time and hundreds of thousands in fines if convicted.
