I guess 'pull the rug' is a kinder, gentler Americanized version of 'stab in the back'. But the core message is the same. There are the troops on the one hand and their domestic enemies at home. And who will win? Andrew Sullivan has a good post on this today. Also look at Jon Chait's piece in The New Republic on Bill Kristol and The Weekly Standard.

Militarism and proto-fascist thinking isn't just something to be studied about the 1920s and 1930s. You can see it today as a growing part of our political discourse, even as the support for it in absolute terms diminishes. It is all of a piece. You cannot separate the bogus war for democracy abroad from the war against democracy and the rule of law at home.

1. Well, a big chunk of facism is corporatism, and that BushCo-corporate marriage certainly fits the

definition in that regard. You don't need jackboots and a toothbrush moustache to be Fascist; in fact, the Italian model under Mussolini (the proto-model, if you will) was more purely Fascist than the shit Hitler pulled. "You're with us, or against us" is a key aspect of that thinking, as well.

Not that Mussolini was any prize or worthy of emulation at all, but he sure could motivate a good chunk of the national soul, to more convincing effect than Monkeyboy managed on his best day. If BushCo was gonna take a page from the Facist How-To book, he should have spent more time shaking his fist on balconies....he never did get that "strut" down, though he tried like hell--guess the high heeled shoe lifts threw him off, or something....

3. If Josh is mentioning the F-Word

(that we here have been talking about since just after the Stolen Election of 2000) then I wonder what's going on out there. He has Beltway friends in the journalism community and is connected. I don't think he would put himself out there to say this on his blog if he didn't have some support.

Josh is a good guy. He has some restraints....but then who doesn't if one lives in the Power World.

Sure, Marshall's come a good way since he was in need of emergency surgery. And I do like the way he began this bit by at least checking for any tendrils to reality.

But anyone who still reads Sullivan remains pretty deep in the Euphemedia mosh pit. We shall see.
