What would you say to the president?

As snappy comebacks go, waitress Beverly McWilliams stood her ground Wednesday against the nation’s Customer-in-Chief.

President Bush, during his surprise visit to the Corner Café in Riverside, initially said he wouldn’t be eating anything. McWilliams told him that the restaurant had the best biscuits and gravy in town — that’s almost a double-dog-dare to a Texan.

He caved. The president would have a biscuit.

When McWilliams brought it, Bush noted that it wasn’t very big.

“I told him, ‘This isn’t Texas, after all,’” McWilliams said.

Touche. But we’d like to know how you might have responded in the same situation.

Here are a few suggestions to start the biscuit rolling:

• “Well, Mr. President, we’ve already seen what happens when you bite off more than you can chew.”

• “Keep cracking on the biscuits, pal, and see where this gravy tureen ends up.”

• “The big biscuits are reserved for presidents with approval ratings in the 40s.”
