4. I was watching that night.
I said to my daughter, "They might as well just give her the million dollars right now."

The kid on the show with the harmonic was good was really great too, style reminded of theat Blue's Traveler fellow. But he was a little to weepy for my taste. Bianca handled constructive criticism like a little pro and didn't melt into tears like the boy did. He was young too, maybe a year or two older.

20. A LOT of natural ability and likely a little bit of training
Training mainly to learn how to sustain the notes and control the vibrato. I'm not disparaging the kid by any stretch--everybody needs some training--nothing wrong with that. She was fantastic!

21. What is vibrato?
Is it something you find more in the music of some cultures than others? I always wondered why Gaelic music is so captivating. Maybe it's the style of singing?

22. Vibrato is that lovely
slow vibration, wavering, you hear on sustained notes. It means that she's been taught to sing from the diaphragm, which is correct technique.

What a lovely little girl. I know she'll go far. O8) :-)

23. Vibrato
Simply put, it's that kind of wavery sound you hear in her long, sustained notes. A little bit goes a long way (vibrato and tremolo overkill is :puke:), and she used JUST enough. I'm totally impressed.

26. hogwash
you don't need training for the vibrato - at least not all folks capable of singing with the vibrato require training.

It can be just what you hear and mimick - some are lucky in that regard, that is their natural talent, the right pitch and the ability to repeat the beauty they hear.

It is difficult to teach an adult proper vibrato, it would be very difficult indeed to teach a child of 6.

She is just gifted, the voice of an angel out of the mouth of a babe.

It's lovely and sweet and heart warming.

32. the some training is what I call hogwash on
She doesn't have to have training - it is just what she hears and repeats, even stage presence for the little one can be natural.

There are folks that don't need "some training" - there are some that I have heard that were ruined by "some training".

39. I agree that some people have natural ability
And I don't mean she had formal voice lessons. But I do think she was...helped with some guidance, let's say. But I do NOT mean that in a Svengali-like way, or mean to detract from her talent, which is totally natural and wonderful. I'm talking about the delivery of the song.

24. Here.
Some are just born with it. But MORE importantly is that ear! That is NOT an easy song to sing, particularly for one so young and she nailed it!

I had a vocal student come to me several years ago. I did my standard "let's hear what you can do" and demonstrated a vocalise and asked the student to repeat. I played the chord, he opened his mouth and out came Pavarotti. Never had a singing lesson in his life. I closed the lid on the piano and gave him the name and phone number of another vocal coach more suited to his ability (same one that coached Audra McDonald as a matter of fact).

When singers can captivate the attention of someone who is basically tone deaf, they got a gift.

43. Her pitch accuracy and control were excellent...
But what really showed that she has a remarkable ear was when nerves drove her pitch up, she settled in the new key and sang the second half 1/2 step higher. That is a talent that isn't usually seen developmentally (without training) until much later.

But really, who gives a damn about all that, the girl made me cry.

46. I train singers in her age group
I'm an elementary Music Teacher. It's all about helping them find their head voice. Generally children who have parents who sing to them (whether the parents can carry a tune or not) are the children who find it and are able to use it the best.

Her voice broke in more places in this song, and she was more noticeably off-pitch in a few places. The judges all still seemed to love her though. And she is the poster child for 'cute'.

(edit - oops, already posted. That'll teach me to post while doing 6 other things simultaneously)

41. I'm glad Paul Potts won it. Connie was cute, but she has a lifetime of singing ahead.
For those who haven't seen it, look up the video of Paul Potts first appearance on the show. You could see the judges smirk and perceive the audience chuckle when this dumpy looking overweight cellphone salesman with bad teeth walked out an announced that he was going to sing for them. Then he opened his mouth and Pavarotti came out. The guy really is a phenomenal singer.

I have to wonder why we don't ever get singers like these on AMERICAN reality shows. Instead, we get stuck with poppy American Brittney Spears wannabe's.
