Does the US today look anything like pre-civil war Spain?
I studied the Spanish Civil war in college and saw it as the textbook example of fascism responding to a pandering congress and disunity.

What's scaring me is that the US is starting to look like that. Some of the same elements are there: instead of Communist fearmongering, there is Islamaphobic fearmongering. Instead of the Republic being fragmented and not being true to its constituents, its our congress being this way.

What scares me even more is we have a dictator in waiting. No, for all of Bush's dumbshit moves he is still not a dictator (yet) and quite frankly, I think he's too dumb to pull a Franco. The person who scares me most is Ghouliani, who has said on a number of occasions he would LOVE to be a dictator. He ruled NYC like one, even trying to stay in office past his last day "for the unity of the city."

Guiliani = Franco ?

Not too far of a leap...
