Let's play "Predict the Propaganda!" What book will they show Bush reading?
That's the new game with conservatives. Make Bush look smart. Tony Snow announced he's read sixty books this year. Karl Rove went on Rush Limbaugh and invented on the spot a story about their reading contest (contradicting Snow's number of 60, but that's a different story). You could almost hear John Lovitts' voice--"yeah, he read twenty, no, SIXTY books! Why, he reads all the time, all the time, I tell you. He reads between meals... No, he reads DURING meals, yeah. That's the ticket!"

So soon the photos of Bush curled in a corner in a quiet, unscripted, contemplative moment should start to circulate. Bush as he really is. Thoughtful Bush. Thinking Bush. Wise and scholarly book, immune to the criticism of those lesser minds, but probably tolerant of their petty ignorance, as all great and well-read--we did mention he's well-read, didn't we-- people are.

What will it be? Not "My Pet Goat," you can be sure. Bush doesn't have to actually read the book, so they can even pick one without drawings. What will it be? Toni Morrison, to prove he doesn't hate black people? Something by Buckley, to show he's a true conservative? The Bible... that would be too predictable, but they aren't known for subtlety--it's not like their voters will have read whatever book they choose.

And where will the photo be? In the limo, relaxing before a charity event? On Air Force One as the evening rays of the sun filter gently through the windows above the clouds? At a summit, honing the razor edge of his intellect before diving into critical negotiations with the greatest minds from the rest of the world?

Predict the propaganda.

3. Nah, they don't want it to look honest.
Otherwise they'd just show him on the john with his plasma screen tuned to Cinemax.

Another possibility:

War and Peace. In a wingback chair. With a smirk.

Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 11:34 AM by Marr
A book on whatever Lincoln interpretation is currently in vogue amongst the Haves and Have-Mores.

16. Some art of war book by von Clausewitz...
... with the pocket version of the 2006 Hustler Babes on Bikes issue.

On the table beside him will be the usual book(s) on Lincoln and maybe a Bill Bennett book on family values.

Spokespeople will have a difficult time explaining the smirk when he's supposed to be reading von Clausewitz, but the questioning will be shallow, disinterested and unthreatening, so no harm no foul, except to add more bullshit to the myth of the incurious idiot as well-read statesman meme.
