1. It's the latest thing in liberal blogs:
Trimming the blogroll. Sadly, there is a number of habitues at Kos who think that DU is naught but rabble.

Eh. Can't please everyone.

5. Like me!
No one in the progressive blogosphere should slight anyone else. We really ARE all in this together, and we really DO share a lot of common goals. I personally don't find any differences worth taking about between Kossacks and DUers.

B-)

14. I have seen the comments...
In a lot of places, certainly not just Kos. It is my experience that there is a certain subset of Dems and liberals who live in a permanent state of disdain. I ran into some of them, inside the beltway types, while working on a very abortive project.

I don't pay those types much mind. Life is way too short.

9. Speaking as a rabble particle myself...
I gotta say I don't read DKos. I find their diary format too hard to navigate. I prefer the DU free for all, because that's what us rabble are like. My few trips to Kos left me with a cold feeling. DU always feels like a busy house party--a zillion conversations that you can pick up on at any time. Kos feels like a zillion competing cacaphonous monologues. I prefer my mob scenes a little more interactive.

28. Exactly how I feel!
I don't think Kos is all that user-friendly, unless you're an old-timer and have known your way around it a while. I read things there now and then, when someone links it, or it turns up when I search. Other than that, I very much prefer the interface here. The only other community I find as easy to navigate, with nearly as many cool features is Scubaboard.

56. i gotta chime in here too. i totally agree--and when i've seen mr. "kos"
on the telly, or gotten linked to that website (from here) i always get the feeling that they are much more "moderate" than i care to put up with.

maybe i'm mistaken, but that is my impression. my political passion and anger is not moderate. i'd have to be too constrained or on my best behavior if posting there (which i never have) but this place feels like home.

8. lots of drama over there....
Apparently some of their more regular diarists also had their blogs deleted and it ain't pretty.

For whatever kvetching goes on here, it's generally a small percentage of the constant shitstorms that happen over there - usually caused by Kos himself.

Here's a reaction to the trimmed blogroll:

46. You just hit upon the very reason why I don't frequent Kos
The answer is Kos himself. I find him to be a tad on the arrogant side. Despite what some say, DU allows room for ample disagreement. Hence why we have so many flamewars over here, often over petty shit. But Kos, it's his way or the highway, and I don't like his way. He strikes me as practicing a very mainstream and even conservative form of liberalism, and has even called himself a "Libertarian progressive" before, whatever the hell that means. No discussion of alternative 9-11 theories allowed, and I think, correct me if I'm wrong, no discussion of voter fraud in the 2004 elections. I know it's his forum and he had the right to run it as he sees fit, so I'm not disputing that. I just don't go there.

That, and as others have said, the interface at Kos sucks.

17. I never go to KOS anymore
It seemed like Markos was getting a little too much like a celebrity or something and dark rumblings about KOS being "the blog to follow... or else".

And there are WAY too many diarists. I can't separate the good ones from the bads ones any more.

But the thing that killed it for me is that KOS does not allow any 9/11 "alternate theories". Period.
No discussion, zapped if you do.

Sorry, I get enough censorship in my daily media diet.

22. yeah, it was a crappy move....
He's limited his blogroll to blogs that he claims to actually read, so what he's saying is that if they're good enough for him, they're good enough for everyone who visits his site - even if they share different tastes or interests. I think he's actually trying to cut off competition for page views, but of course he'd deny that.

He's #1 by a far, far piece. Ain't no one gonna play catchup for a long time, either.

Nah, Markos has to get serious now, for '08. This yearly Kos thing has established him as a real power player and as such, their certain steps to that minuet. One must not diverge from them, either.

Recently, he also came out against dirty words. To each his own.

Certainly crushes the dreams of The Rude One, I am sure. ;-)

39. I like both KOS and DU
Formats and style are quite different. As for the Blogroll, I think I read that Kos wants some sort of 50 state blog effort, so he may be clearing space on the Blogroll for that.

And really DU and Kos are both big enough that they really don't need to be linked. They are two of the bigger boys on the block.

Who knows? This place is a clearinghouse for (mostly) progressive Dems ... it is across the board. Beauty + truth and division + hatred. It's a crapshoot.

That's why I love it - it's REAL.

Kos is likely shooting for a 'blogostar' role w/ a Dem candidate.

47. It helps to take breaks from DU now and again
I do this on occasion, and I find that when I come back it's like coming back home. In spite of all the silliness on DU, it is still one of the best sites on the internet, hands down. You can learn more here in a week than you could reading magazines and newspapers in a month. This site is the best place to get information and to connect with like-minded people. But too much of it can be draining.

Take breather for yourself now and again. You'll find the urge to quit will be far less if you do.
