Schlozman Out at Justice Department
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/003959.php

Bradley Schlozman, a former Justice Department official who was at the center of the U.S. attorneys scandal and is under investigation by the Departments inspector general for his alleged efforts to politicize the Civil Rights Division, has finally left his post at the Department.

After he left his position as the U.S. attorney in Kansas City this April, Schlozman moved to the Justice Department office that oversees all U.S. attorneys. Reached on his cell phone today, Schlozman confirmed that he'd left the Department last week, but refused to say anything more and then hung up.

Before being tapped as the U.S. attorney for Kansas City in March of 2006 (after his predecessor Todd Graves was abruptly fired), Schlozman oversaw the voting rights section of the Civil Rights Division with an iron hand. Former employees say that, in tandem with Hans von Spakovsky, Schlozman gutted the voting rights division's efforts to protect African-American voters and made sure that the group did not oppose voter ID laws. The two also punished lawyers and other employees who did not toe the line, former employees say, sometimes changing performance evaluations to add negative comments.

Schlozman has further been accused of politicizing the hiring at the Civil Rights Division, famously commenting that he was replacing Democratic hires with "good Americans." It's this activity which the Department's joint internal investigation, led by the inspector general and Office of Professional Responsibility, is probing.

2. Is the Office of Special Counsel doing a clean-out of Hatch Act violators, like ROVE
and others? Who else is bailing?

Are these guys "resigning" while we are not being informed of the facts of their being "fired" as punishment for Hatch Act violations?

8. You escape Hatch Act punishment by leaviong USG employment
Removal from the job is the maximum punishment.
Leaving government precludes punishing someone.
It places them out of the reach of the statute.

16. Take ROVE for example. This week he was on 3 Sunday shows and not one mention
of his problems with the Hatch Act.

What if the news had been, "Rove forced out of government service by illegal conduct" instead of "Rove Resigns to Spend Time with His Momma." ??

There is a huge difference. One is disgraceful, the other not. If they are avoiding scandal, Blotch needs to be investigated for how this is playing out.

when I worked for the Repub party (I can explain) the expression "good American" was code for someone who was dutiful and not very bright. Wonder if it still means the same.

17. VIDEO Leahy To Schlozman: ‘You’re Trying To Break Gonzales’ Record’ Of Saying ‘I Don’t Recall’

Leahy To Schlozman: ‘You’re Trying To Break Gonzales’ Record’ Of Saying ‘I Don’t Recall’
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/06/05/leahy-schlozman/

Today before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Justice Department official Bradley Schlozman was supposed to testify on his role in the politicization of the Department’s Civil Rights Division and political cases he pursued against liberals while U.S. attorney in Missouri.

But instead of explaining his actions, Schlozman repeatedly claimed ignorance on the many scandals in which he’s been involved. At one point, committee members could no longer take it. Fed up, chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) held up a Justice Dept. manual on election offenses and said:

You know, I tend to think that perhaps you use this more as a doorstop than as something you actually had to follow. … I think you’re trying to break Attorney General Gonzales’ record of saying you “don’t recall” or you “don’t remember.” I’ve lost count of the number of times you’ve said that. ........

22. BRADBLOG: GOP/DoJ 'Voter Fraud' Zealot Bradley Schlozman Out at DoJ
GOP/DoJ 'Voter Fraud' Zealot Bradley Schlozman Out at DoJ
Yet Another One Bites the Dust in Continuing U.S. Attorney Purge Scandal...
http://www.bradblog.com/?p=4982

TPMMuckraker has the scoop on the latest now-former U.S. Attorney to resign entirely from the DoJ in the wake of the U.S. Attorney Purge scandal. Bradley Schlozman had reportedly been under investigation by the DoJ's inspector general. Schlozman had been moved into the U.S. Attorney position in Western Missouri before subsequently bringing bogus "voter fraud" indictments in the state just prior to the November 2006 general election.

The MO indictments were in violation of the DoJ's own written rules which disallowed such cases to be brought during an election period. After leaving his post in Kansas City recently, Schlozman had been reassigned at DoJ in the office which oversees all U.S. Attorneys. ........

23. DOJ's Selective Prosecution of the National Voter Registration Act
August 17, 2007 at 08:39:55
DOJ's Selective Prosecution of the National Voter Registration Act
by Project Vote Page 1 of 2 page(s)
http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_project__070816_doj_s_selective_pros.htm

Project Vote has repeatedly reported on the Department of Justice’s selective prosecution of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA). Instead of addressing state’s clear failure to enforce NVRA Section 7’s mandatory provisions requiring states to offer public assistance clients the opportunity to register to vote (see this study which details the continuing problems), the DOJ chose to pursue enforcement of Section 8, which details how voters should be purged from voter rolls. Many states have buckled to the DOJ’s pressure and eligible voters have been removed from the lists and barred from voting.

Now this bias and partisanship by the Department of Justice has created another problem for advocates of voter rights. A case brought by the Western District of Missouri US Attorney’s office trying to force the Missouri Secretary of State to purge voter rolls has led to a far reaching decision that could impact enforcement of Section 7, United States v. State of Missouri, et al. (W.D. Mo. 2005). The Court found that the Secretary of State has no authority to enforce Section 8 against local and county Boards of Elections. If applied to Section 7, organizations would need to sue in each county to enforce the law instead of filing one complaint against a state entity. The additional resources needed to do this could be exorbitant.

The case was filed over the objections of the then United States Attorney, against a Democratic Secretary of State and in a state where there was a competitive Senate race the following year. The objecting US Attorney was forced out of office and replaced by a Bradley Schlozman, a partisan Department of Justice employee. ..........

A case brought for political reasons usually does not have good facts. Bad facts often lead to bad law.
