NY Daily NewsFor those who lost loved ones at Ground Zero six years ago, Saturday's deadly fire showed that the lessons of 9/11 still haven't been learned.
"There's been so much death on that site, and now all of a sudden this happens," said Diane Horning, whose 26-year-old son, Matthew, died in the World Trade Center. "I am devastated at their loss. But on top of that, I am angry."
Horning and others said the deaths of two firefighters - who were trapped gasping for air in a doomed building - seem to echo the 9/11 tragedy because of bad decisions, poor communications and inadequate equipment.
Community members near the 130 Liberty St. site of the former Deutsche Bank building had long complained about unsafe demolition practices and the toxic materials in the building, only to face official indifference, she said.

Blame contractors for hazards, lack of water, FDNY source Shoddy work by contractors at the toxic former Deutsche Bank tower contributed to nightmarish conditions that trapped and killed two firefighters, FDNY sources told the Daily News.
General contractor Bovis Lend Lease's construction plan called for the 41-story skyscraper to have a working water source throughout the demolition.
"They were responsible for having water in that building and for keeping it free of combustible materials," a fire source said. "Clearly, that did not happen."
FDNY officials and building owner Lower Manhattan Development Corp. declined to comment on the work while the investigation continues.
But sources said the building was filled with flammable materials and debris, which helped spread the blaze.
