Guardian: TV airing for Islam's story of Christ
There was no manger, Christ is not the Messiah, and the crucifixion never happened. A forthcoming ITV documentary will portray Jesus as Muslims see him.

With the Koran as a main source and drawing on interviews with scholars and historians, the Muslim Jesus explores how Islam honours Christ as a prophet but not as the son of God. According to the Koran the crucifixion was a divine illusion. Instead of dying on the cross, Jesus was rescued by angels and raised to heaven.

The one-hour special, commissioned and narrated by Melvyn Bragg, is thought to be the first time the subject has been dealt with on British television. Lord Bragg said: "I was fascinated by the idea ... Jesus was such a prominent figure in Islam but most people don't know that."

He denies the programme will divide communities. Raised as an Anglican, he describes the documentary as thoughtful and well researched. "I hope it will provoke among Muslims the feeling they are included in television."

1. Umm... Jesus quite clearly *is* the Messiah in Islam

From the Qur'an (3:45-53)
(And remember o Muhammad) when the angels said: O Mary! God gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, illustrious in the world and the Hereafter and one of those brought near (unto God). He will speak to mankind in his cradle and in his man-hood, and he is one of the righteous. She said: My Lord! How can I have a child when no mortal has touched me? He said: So (it will be). God creates what He wills. If He decrees a thing, He says to it only: Be! and it is. And he will teach him the Book and the wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel. And will make him a messenger to the Children of Israel, (saying): I come to you with a sign from your Lord. See! I fashion for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, and I breathe into it and it is a bird, by God’s leave. I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I raise the dead, by God’s leave. And I announce to you what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Here truly is a portent for you, if you are to be believers. And (I come) confirming what was before me of the Torah, and to make lawful some of what was forbidden to you. I come to you with a sign from your Lord, so keep your duty to God and obey me. God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path. But when Jesus became conscious of their disbelief, he cried: Who will be my helpers in the cause of God? The disciples said: We will be God’s (cause’s) helpers. We believe in God, and bear you witness that we have surrendered (to Him). Our Lord! We believe in what You have revealed and follow him whom You have sent. Enrol us among those who witness (to the Truth).

Furthermore, Muslim eschatology holds that on the Last Day, Jesus along with Micha'al and Jibriil will come again to judge the living and dead, including Mohammed.

This is just a pet peeve of mine, given that by most christians' loosest definition of "Christian" (ie, one who believe Jesus was Son of God, messiah, and will come on the day of judgment), and by most muslims' loosest definition of "Muslim" (ie, one who believes in One God and the Last Day), all Muslims are Christian and all Christians are Muslim. Go figure.

EDIT: typo

I checked and it was on our tv last night. The Guardian , or Grauniad as it used to known because they had an odd habit of misspelling words, conveniently missed out that the program was actually called " The Muslim Jesus" .

It was on ITV1 and doubtless will be repeated anyway.

I've assumed that to be the correct documentary whatever. There was something else called Dude, Where's My Car but that was more than hour long so I guess it couldn't have been that.
