Amish party ends with 21 arrests
Amish party ends with 21 arrests

Abby Crock/The Daily Jeffersonian

CALDWELL (OH)-- Eleven adults were fined $300 each and sentenced to jail and to perform community service on Monday for their part in what was described as a large party involving Amish community members.

Complaints made to the Noble County Sheriff's Office regarding loud music led to the mass arrest Sunday night of 21 Amish folks in Beaver Township.

Sheriff Landon T. Smith said several complaints were made to his office from residents in the Bailey's Mills area in eastern Noble County -- all of the complaints described a loud party with loud music coming from a wooded area.

Smith said deputies confiscated five coolers, a generator, lighting system, two boom boxes, three 12-volt batteries, some beer and ice.

Smith said the sheriff's office investigates Amish parties on a regular basis, however, arrests of this magnitude are rare, he said.

4. Actually amish youth gone wild is a part of their tradition
the kids are expected to explore the other world and make up their own minds about which world they intend to live in. That exploration has a history of being rather far out. Google Rumspringa

2. It's the Blyers and Millers in this neck of the woods--
And they do know how to party lol. I read in the paper last week where a local Amish boy was arrested for DUI and underage drinking. He passed out at the enterance to the fair grounds, with the reins in his hands and was busted for DUI lol.

3. Reminds me of the time
when way back in the 50's my husband to be, a girl friend and her boy friend went to a park one night. We had a borrowed record player. From a gov't agency were the boy friend worked. A park ranger came upon us and told us to leave because we were not allowed to be in the park at night. We vamoosed we didn't want that record with the gov't stamp be known. I had almost forgot that.

8. Um, it's illegal for adults to give minors liquor
They arrest people for it all the time. Hard to believe, isn't it?

The sheriff was doing his job.

If he didn't do his duty, and one of those kids got hurt, would you excoriate him for dereliction of duty?

10. It sounds like they were on private property...

...having a party involving loud music and alcohol. I don't see the big crime -- maybe I'm missing something.

But you're right, serving or selling to minors is illegal -- sending them off to die in our illegal invasion/occupation of Iraq is perfectly OK though. Maybe that would be the appropriate punishment for these young wayward Amish offenders -- a couple tours in Iraq, that oughta straighten'em out.

God bless Amerka.

14. Wow.
Has any member of your family ever been hurt or killed by a drunk teenager driving home from a party given by an adult?

And it doesn't matter if they are on private property or not.
I've heard that murders sometimes occur on private property, but it doesn't stop law enforcement from investigating them.

Your leap of logic equating illegally furnishing intoxicants to minor children to the occupation of Iraq was astounding, though. Kudos on that.

Yeah, there're a whole lot of people in cemeteries as a result of those crazy drunken Amish youth in their horse-drawn buggies. In fact, most violent deaths in this country, as you well know, are caused by those pesky Amish people. I'm with you, we need to get after 'em.

Can you imagine what could have happened if they'd gone out and tried to raise a barn, or milk a goat in that condition? I shudder at the very thought.

Equating illegally furnishing intoxicants to minor children to the occupation of Iraq? Talk about a leap -- can you not comprehend the irony of criminalizing their consumption of alcohol on private property while at the same time saying they're old enough to be shipped off to participate in war? You can't really be that thick, can you?

Why do you hate the Amish?

16. I am familiar with the Amish, yes.
Edited on Sun Aug-19-07 02:15 PM by Ikonoklast
I have had business dealings with my Amish neighbors.
I also know that driving a buggy home drunk IS A PROBLEM in the Amish community.
Ask any Ohio State Patrolman, or county sheriff in Guernsey County.
I am familiar with Caldwell, Ohio, where this occurred, as I do business there.

You are woefully uninformed.

On edit- The Amish do not serve in the military.

So THAT'S why you hate the Amish -- you want 'em to serve in BushCo's militia. I knew it had to be something like that. Let's write our Congress reps -- maybe we can get something done about this. If these barn raising bastards won't start pulling there own weight, I say we deport every last one of 'em to France -- who's with me?

6. Weird Al was right.
Except he was 100 years off. I think it's a great tradition for the Amish to let their youth sow their wild oats before settling down.

7. anyone noticing the banner ads urging adults NOT to sponsor alcohol parties
these messages are bugging the SHIT out of me. so now, parents are allowed to raise their kids as they see fit.

here's a reality check.

i spent two years in a right-wing resort town going to school and two years in an eggheady company town where every other parent had a Phd. the resort town had ZERO tolerance for kids partying. when i moved to the egghead town i was amazed to discover that parents *encouraged* kids to do their drinking under supervision.

the resort town high school had one of the highest drop-out rates in the state. the egghead high school had the lowest drop out rate in that state, bar none.

my personal experience was that kids are going to party no matter what. you can either "criminalize" normal behavior or supervise it. if it's supervised, kids will learn to drink responsibly. if it's not, they won't.

end of story.

12. That would been a "young person's" buggy. The adults are not
allowed such (as full members of the church they must obey the Ordnung).

11. Typical "rumspringa", it sounds like. And the "adults" who got arrested
were obviously over 18, but not members of the Amish church yet (members do not do "rumspringa"). Most Amish kids join up in their late teens/early twenties, and when they do, they typically get married and settle down right away. A SMALL percentage do not join.

Nothing to see here, really.

13. Yes indeed
Watched a few dvd's from the library on the Amish back when I lived in Ohio.

I think it is a swell idea - let the kids choose if they want to live that way or not, and give them the space to decide.

18. I am not sure they would be equipped to successfully integrate
into that outside world, after being raised Amish. So, is it a fair choice?

20. There's a documentary that showed at Sundance Festival, called Devil's Playground. It's about
rumspringa. I only heard about it last week, so that was my first thought when I saw this thread.

I would love to see it.

21. It's very good. I think the kids it shows are probably some of the
more extreme cases of problem youth. Some communities have more of a reputation for wildness in the youth than others.

But the adults (church members) are NEVER wild, lol.

;)

My husband's family have Amish roots (near Lancaster County, PA). Their way of life fascinates me, so it is interesting to read about this part.
