Democrats Target 2008 California Vote Plan

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Democrats and Hollywood luminaries are working to stop a ballot initiative that they say could hand next year's presidential election to the Republicans.

A lawyer with ties to the GOP wants to change the way California awards its electoral votes.

Right now, all 55 votes are awarded to the statewide winner of the presidential election. The proposed change would give two of the state's electoral votes to the statewide winner but all the rest would be allocated according to results in each congressional district.

The change would have meant 22 more electoral votes for President Bush in 2004 and 22 fewer for John Kerry.
