KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A man threw his seriously ill wife four stories to her death because he could no longer afford to pay for her medical care, prosecutors said in charging him with second-degree murder.

According to court documents filed Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court, Stanley Reimer walked his wife to the balcony of their apartment and kissed her before throwing her over.

3. His financial troubles are over.
The tax payers will now support him while he spends the rest of his life in prison.

4. Universal Healthcare would have prevented this.
But why should we care about that?

5. Well, then, just dump the lady like a sack of garbage--
lots of sympathetic people will blame the "system" instead of you, and hold you up as a reason for universal healthcare. Sick, that some folks here are using this story to press for political advantage. But it happens all the time here, and it embarrasses me.

7. Really? Husbands throw their wives out of buildings all the time there?
Let me know where you are, please, so I can make sure I never go there.

9. well then what should he have done?
gone ass deep in debt due to a condition that will take her life shortly anyway?

remember that you are reading the prosecutors take on this, it's in their interest to make this man sound like a cold blooded killer. the couple probably discussed what to do at some point, and chose to die with dignity. i would rather be thrown off a building than a long drawn out death in a hospital at great expense, and make it clear to those close to me.

take issue with the method he chose, but realize that these decisions are made everyday, not everybody wants life at any cost.

10. Debt is not a reason to end someone's life. Deciding that someone's
life is not worth living is not a reason to end that person's life. You don't end someone's life because, hey, it's almost over anyway, let's just cut to the chase and save some money while we're at it. This is a human being, not a blind, incontinent dog who is an inconvenience. I'm sure this guy will say, "She wanted me to do it" as a defense. But it's doubtful she wanted to be tossed off the balcony. Sorry--not buying it.

12. Of course it isn't. The utter asininity of the idea that it IS a reason is precisely what could....
... lead a reasonable person to think that the guy *broke* under the pressure of a despairing impotent love, rather than being possessed of actual malevolent intent. Possibly the law makes no room for such a distinction; the *moral* difference exists nonetheless - they are not morally identical situations.

I don't know the details - maybe he just offed her for an inheritance - that would be a whole different can of worms, obviously.

16. "Debt is not a reason to end someone's life."
You got that right!!! My creditors want me living a long life so I can continue to pay them as long as I can until the day I die! (I suffered a major health setback four years ago--missed work (and paychecks) and still haven't got completely caught up). No checking out early for me!!!

No, my creditors want me living a long life for that monthly payment. There's even talk of putting an ATM in my casket so I can continue to pay them after I'm dead!

6. Horrible.
And you can't get SSI if you have more than 2,000 in assets and are collecting $725 a month from investments.

Some reporter must have got it wrong.
