9*11 Goes On Tour!
NEW YORK — The September 11 memorial is taking a new name, survivors' stories and artifacts from its planned museum on a national tour that begins in South Carolina on the eve of the terrorist attacks' sixth anniversary.

The second stop on the tour is Raleigh, North Carolina

The 15-city tour throughout the South and Midwest is modeled after the 1980s campaign that raised money to renovate the Statue of Liberty by establishing it as a national icon, organizers say.

"We are building a national symbol here that people are going to look at and hopefully associate as being American," said Joseph Daniels, president of the memorial's foundation.

I wonder if there'll be vendors selling 9*11 trinkets and t-shirts...

And why just tour the South and Mid-West?

6. It's to raise money for the building of the memorial.
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 11:25 PM by AZBlue
These are just items that (I guess) will be part of the memorial. In the article it explains: "More than $300 million has been raised privately and more than $400 million is committed by the government to build the 8-acre memorial, which will set two waterfall-filled pools just above the twin towers' footprints, surrounded by a glade of oak and sweetgum trees. Visitors will descend underground to a September 11 museum and to view the waterfalls from below."

If it's done tastefully, I'm ok with it as a means to raise the money. But, tastefully and respectfully are the key words here!

2. Can we have 9/11 on ice, too?
I think that'd be a great addition to their shameless marketing of a national tragedy.

3. how is the memorial presented?
only mad if it is put on as A political message. If anything to do with bush or especially Iraq is even mentioned it is tainted and needs to be packed up and sent back.

4. "...the new cities on the tour, which include several stops in presidential swing states..."
Daniels said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who chairs the memorial board and has spearheaded its fundraising for a year, did not choose the new cities on the tour, which include several stops in presidential swing states. The mayor hasn't yet committed to which cities he would stop at on the tour. Bloomberg left the Republican Party in June and has actively courted speculation of a possible White House bid in 2008.

"During the planning process, the destination cities evolved, but they didn't evolve through discussions with City Hall," Daniels said.
