Chris Matthews: "the country wants ... a little bit of fascism"

Saying "the country wants ... a little bit of fascism," on Imus Matthews further saluted Giuliani

On the February 7 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews heaped praise on GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, calling the former New York mayor "the kind of gutsy, street-corner politician we all grew up with" who "stood on the corner during the fire and told us what was going on." Matthews said that he would like "(a) guy who wasn't on the ranch during Katrina -- who was out on the street corner answering questions," adding: "I'm so sick of southern guys with ranches running this country. I want a guy to run for president who doesn't have a fucking -- I'm sorry -- a ranch. Wouldn't that be good?"

(...)

From the February 7 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning:

MATTHEWS: The subways didn't smell like pee anymore. Even the phone booths in New York have always smelled like pee -- when there's not even a booth, it's just a phone and it smells like pee. And this guy cleaned it up, and he made you feel like you had a right to walk the street safely. I think he did a great job. I'm sorry. And I think the country wants a boss like that. You know, a little bit of fascism there. Just a little bit. Just a pinch of it.

-------------------------------------

Oh, no, Chris. The country, the WORLD doesn't need that shit.

My uncle fought honest-to-God Nazis in occupied Europe, and I'm pretty sure he would have ripped your head off if you said that in front of him.

"It Can't Happen Here" ain't so far-fetched with knuckleheads like you out there.

-------------------------------------

UPDATE:

The co-producer of 9/11 Press for Truth has written an open letter to Matthews;

An Open Letter to Chris Matthews & the management at MSNBC

Dear Mr. Matthews,

Is even a little bit of fascism that led to the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto
what we want in our country? If you could travel in time, would you even want to
take even a little walk along a street there?

I for one do not want even one iota of fascism in my country or in a leader? As
far as I'm concerned the current resident in the White House, so deeply in the
pocket of the most powerful corporate interests, already embodies and enacts
more than just a little bit of fascism. Please wake up Matthews!

You know lately I've come to really appreciate your playing hardball when it
comes to the Iraq war. However, when it comes to Guiliani, I think you're way
over the edge and doing the country and especially New Yorkers and 9/11 widows a
grave disservice.

Mr. Matthews, please have a read of Radio Silence about the Motorola radio
scandal where Guiliani's negligence(?) may have caused the deaths or scores of
first responders and widow Kristen Breitweiser's posting on Huffington Post
about Guiliani's Deadly Impact in NY.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kristen-breitweiser/giulianis-deadly-impact_b_18564.html

Read this and then tell the all 9/11 widows and members of the NYFD or NYPD that
Guiliani's brand of itsy-bitsy fascism is what this country wants or needs! Mr.
Matthews, with respect, you need to spin out up from your spin zone and examine
the real record of your fascist-lite wannabe boss. And you need to set the
record straight on Hardball and prove you know how to do good old-fashioned real
investigative reporting. Do that and tell me how good you feel spinning the
image of dust covered Mayor stuck on the streets of lower Manhattan because he
had elected to put his Emergency Management Operations center in WTC 7!

And if you can't or won't do this on Hardball, MSNBC needs to play hardball and
give you your pink slip and find someone who will tell it straight about Rudy
Guiliani.

And for God's sake, enough already, any more fascism in this country, we'd have
Blackwater, Haliburton and scores of other corporate contractors running open
detention centers for everyone now daring to claim the emperor (or Rudy) or the
empire has no clothes.

These are the same folks that would have ratted out those who tossed tea in the harbor a number of years ago.

They like authority because they aspire to it, like it, and are aroused by it.

13. I'm kind of sick of Tweety telling us what the country wants..

First, we wanted a "regular guy", not a "smart" guy like Gore or Kerry.

So he pumps up the Chimp and tells us that we really love the swaggering moron. And then the whole flight suit thing happens and he tells us how much we love the idiot.

Now, he's sick of Chimpy? So move on to the next mistake?

Tweety, you're so irrelevant. It would be sad if there was anything sympathetic about you.

16. He's snapped completely. He's gotten farther and farther away from reality.
In just the last week I was horrified to see him speaking from a location to someone else who was interviewing HIM, maybe Keith Olbermann, perhaps, and while he was speaking saliva was streaming down his chin, and hanging in a blob there, just dangling, ready to fall onto his knees.

I was horrified. He didn't even seem to notice, and the camera just kept right on his face. They went to a commercial, and I thought, "Thank God, now he will wipe his chin," and when they came back, BADDA BING! There was the same saliva.

What the HELL is happening to him?

I think whatever this is, is very intense. That's just not normal. His thoughts, like the "fascist" remark started getting sick years ago, and it just keeps building.

Oh, yuck!

i'd take it further, and say that, despite all of us bleeding heart pinko commie liberal fags, this country will choose fascism when our empire is clearly & undeniably in decline.

when:
sea levels rise & flood waterfront property
there's no more cheap gas
'minorities' become the majority
there's no more cheap food shipped all over the country & up from chile & mexico
etc.
etc.

and then the rest of the planet will have to get together & bring us to democracy by invading & occupying the country. THAT will be ww3.

40. Crime went down in NYC under Ruddy due to demographics. K&R
The population of probable criminals was significantly reduced, hence the number of crimes went down.

That's about it.

Where does it say Rudy gets credit for a reduction of births years before he ever thought of running
for mayor.

We live in a fantasy world. Fascism had nothing to do with anything in NYC, a little or a lot.

42. "a little bit of facism".... in a way he's right about that.
How do you suppose corporations got so powerful? The American citizen for a long period of time has bought the idea that it was patriotic to be a consumer, and the American worker has bought the idea that it was all about the needs of the company. As long as the bells and whistles on the train jingled, jangled, and tooted and the lights came one, every one was happy to wave flags and sing "God Bless America." Land of the free and home of the power shopper. Facism is about nationalism as a product, a brand. As a culture, we have learned to be comfortable with branding.

Yes, the American people do have a role in it. Someone has to buy these mounds of stuff and embrace the crap they peddle as values now.
