3. Not much they could say that would be a dealbreaker for me.
My standards in the GE have been lowered considerably.

4. I will vote for them.
Most Democrats favor civil unions but oppose gay marriage. I'm not a single issue voter. And which of the GOP candidates will support gay marriage? or even civil unions for that matter? Do I vote independent for some Green candidate or something? No, because then we are stuck with a GOP president for sure.

7. At this point, it would not stop me. Although marriage equality is the only proper
conclusion, I am not opposed to civil unions until we get there.

10. I agree.

In fact, I think anyone who considers marriage fairness a top issue pretty much knows that the nominee (whomever it turns out to be) is not going to come out and say "I'm in favor of marriage for all."

It's the sad reality we face.

But, as you say, it is possible to see civil unions as a step along the way to true equality. On the day civil unions become the law of the land, we'll declare victory -- and keep on fighting! :D

9. As if the Republican could be any better?
Sitting out this next election would be self-defeating, no matter what the single issue is.

11. Keep your eye on SCOTUS
Another Republican appointment to the Supreme Court will likely make all discussions about gay marriage and civil unions totally irrelevant. We are really that close to a hard right court and it is scary.

16. Yes, but from some of the comments I have been hearing ...
about this issue and some of the candidates I see that some don't get what is at stake...

13. I'll vote for the Dem, even if I have to hold my nose doing it.
I'll vote for the BEST candidate in the primaries.
Then I'll vote for the Dem nominee in November.

And I doubt it will be the same person.

17. Reality is what it is....
Civil unions is a small step towards marriage equality.

Not the final step, but a step in the right direction.

No Repub will qualify for my vote, that's for sure.

18. This issue will not determine my vote.
Frankly, I won't vote for MOST of the 8 candidates in the general election, but it's not because of the difference between civil unions and marriage, although I fully support gay marriage, and my chosen primary candidate is the ONLY candidate who does.

20. I suspect that the best route to gay marriage is via several years of civil unions.

I think that America is probably more likely to end up with gay marriage if it introduces civil unions, waits for a few years to prove that they don't cause the second coming, and then renames them, than if it goes for all-or-nothing straight off.
