The Real Reasons Karl Rove Might Have Resigned
There are many, many different reasons why Karl Rove might have abruptly announced his resignation today. The only one we know for sure isn't true is the one he gave -- he wants to spend more time with his family.

That is the lamest excuse in the history of political excuses. It's such a hackneyed, cliche that it smacks of panic and poor timing. If Rove had any time to think or set up another job before he left, he wouldn't have had to go with the desperate, "spend more time with my family" BS.

He said he wants to be closer to his son who is going to college in San Antonio. Which parent leaves the job of a lifetime to stalk their kids at college? Did Rove leave the White House to attend more keggers?

So, what's the real deal here? Let's start out with the most benign and work our way toward the more fun and ugly possibilities.

Read the reasons, they are a hoot! Also, many of them touch on many of the other posts already bouncing around DU.

1. My guess is that after a few weeks of vacation
spent with his lawyers and trying to make the investigations go away, he will turn up as the trusted advisor to whichever of the 10 goons has emerged as the GOP front runner.

4. Yep.
Or he'll be involved as chief party strategist.

2. I agree that his reason is no more than a universal bogus non-answer
Unless in this case his family happens to also be his lawyers. If that's the case I will admit a bit of truth.

3. I only see two real possibilities that Rove is resigning
1) The "erased" emails re: the firing of the USAs and his complicity with the DOJ in this matter.

2) The Wilsons are seeking an appeal on their civil suit re: Plame outing.

It could be either of the above, or it could be both.

There may also be a third influence that ultimately involves Cheney, but the two reasons stated here are also part and parcel of Cheney's machinations in the GOP political theater.

5. Interesting.
Considering the levels of duplicity this man is capable of, I am not ruling anything out just yet. I will wait and see how things play out over the next few days. He may be very savvy, but many around him are not, someone is bound to screw up and leak something of use.

6. Two more: The Abramoff case is not dead yet,
and maybe Bush thinks it will ease the pressure to sack Gonzales. (Or, in a nod to Cheney, they may want to replace him with Libby :)

essentially going to leap from being bush's brain to being Fred Thompson's brain... (not to be confused with TOMMY thompson who just dropped out)

press release over the weekend said thompson will make announcement in September

I doubt if he's in Run/Hide mode - he's protected by the cloak of executive priviledge and if anything gets too hot, ol'duh-bya will jist pardon him -- and give the backdoor deals and blue dogs, who's gonna stop him?
