Fight Averted Over Bush Picks
Deal Avoids Recess Battle By Erin P. Billings
Roll Call Staff
August 13, 2007

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has quietly shelved plans to hold the Senate in pro forma session this month after the White House agreed to refrain from making any executive appointments during the Senators’ August break.

1. Does "pro forma session"
mean the skeleton crew Reid had referred to to block appointments?

2. what do you mean by suckered?
I mean if the Bush administration agrees not to appoint anybody and then does so anyway? Or just making the deal in the first place?

16. "respond" how? A recess appointment can't be undone
even by, lemme think, an act of congress.

29. I meant Reid could respond
by calling for a skeleton crew to come back from vaca and hold a Senate hearing on appointments. It would be a matter of a few phone calls. Hopefully this was a verbal agreement and not something that can't be broken. I don't think Reid is that stupid.

7. I'm sure the poster means the first, not the second.
Reid will look like a sucker if Bush just stabs him in the back on this.

Then again, maybe Bush won't, because for whatever reason it's not worth bothering.

Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 11:34 AM by Blackhatjack
AS long as the children are out on recess we won't make any executive appointments, but as soon as they return to the classroom "I got a whole bunch of appointments to make!"

6. The articles about Reid being suckered on FISA not enough for ya?
After almost ten years of GOPers spitting DemocRAT at him while telling him to STFU because only the majority GOP had a say, Reid is working overtime with his date-rape bi-partisan unity program. That is the definition of sucker.

8. You mean - if anyone is stupid enough to take Bush at his "word"?
Because a person would have to be stupid to take Bush at his "word" - or looking for an excuse to cover their ass (Bush gave his word so you can't fault me for trusting a known liar!!)

Is that what you mean?

Bush agrees not to pursue recess appointments, but as the quid pro quo, the Dems pass the FISA bill.

32. Bush will have the last laugh
when he goes ahead and makes his recess appointments anyway. When will Reid, Pelosi and our other leaders learn you can't negotiate with anyone in the Bush administration or the GOP. They're pathological liars and proud of it.

21. In the ranking of dumb things the Dems have done
since taking power this year, this certainly ranks pretty high up. I honestly can not believe that our leadership continues to take Bush at his word.

Does anyone here think Bush would actually hold off on recess appointments? Because he made a verbal agreement?

If you do, I'll have some of what you're on!

23. Someone with a criticism of the Dems is not necessarily a "Dem Hater"
any more than someone with a criticism of the president is a Bush-hater, as if it were just hate and not something more substantial motivating the person.

Just sayin'.

27. I usually react to that type of comment in the same way
whether it's connected to Bush, Dems, or Cindy Sheehan. It all reminds me too much of "Why do you hate America?"

So there are those who think I stand on one side or another in an argument when really I really just stand up for everyone's right not to be called a "hater" when they're trying to make a point.

24. This Stopped Recess Appointments
Some of us predicted that it would have been Gonzo, not Rove who'd be quitting over this break as boooshie could have then recess-appointed his replacement with NO Senate confirmation...Reid appears to have headed that off. Remember, this is how we got stuck with Bolton at the U.N.

IMHO, this has little to do with the FISA vote...where Reid had too many in his caucus intimidated into voting for that dreadful bill. We still don't know what was said in those private meetings about a possible attack or some other scare tactic this regime used. The FISA story will come out once this regime is removed.

the psycho doesn't make any recess appointments. IF the psycho does renege on the deal, NO HEARINGS for his appointed judges.

I heard this report on C-SPAN'S WJ this morning from the Roll Call reporter.
