She said that she would rather fly commercial but that she is NOT allowed to do so and must fly on a government jet because she's second in line to the presidency and her whereabouts must be known at all times and she must be able to be flown back to DC at a moments notice.

She is a very smart lady. She made the GOP house members look like asses while calmly explaining the required security measures.

The decision was made by the executive office for security purposes.

While you're at it, provide a name of a military plane available that will fly non-stop across country smaller than the C-32 as you've been requested by several posters.

172. She is allowed
She has to use commercial and/or private aircraft for any "political" trips (fundraising) and for vacations/retreats. This was all just a way to give Hastert a government plane to fly home and back and now they're extending it to Speaker Pelosi. It really has nothing to do with security or they'd require it for every flight she takes. They can set aside the Gulfstream III for the Speaker since it was used for that purpose before. If due to the weight/passenger load/headwinds the flight needs to refuel, there are plenty of military bases that are secure for her plane to land.

179. You're wrong
According to an Executive Order signed by Bush after 9/11, all heads of the government are required to fly in military jets for security reasons.

Hastert used a military jet for ALL his trips.

Also, she can use the military plane for political trips. She just has to refund the government for the cost. Any member of Congress can do this.

191. Actually, that's not quite true
The use of a military aircraft was given to the Speaker after 9/11 with certain restrictions. One of them is a prohibition against use for personal trips. When the Speaker is traveling to and from her district, she is on government business. When they are going to retreats or fundraisers, it is personal.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "heads of government" stuff since we don't have a parlimentary system. Personally, I think Hastert was given the privilege as a payoff from the administration. In my opinion, it was unnecessary for him and it's unnecessary for Speaker Pelosi. Why stop there? Senator Byrd is 3rd in line to the Presidency. He doesn't have his own aircraft.

Capt. Herb McConnell, the spokesman for the 89th Airlift wing at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, said the C-20 is sometimes "able to make a coast-to-coast flight at times during the year, but not when there are strong headwinds such as during the winter."

142. She asked for a coast-to-coast plane (there are 3). Repub Blunt started the 757 smear.
House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo., seems to be the one who first publicly raised the notion that the plane Pelosi requested is the C-32.

"I understand on this particular airplane there is a bedroom," Blunt said.

"I hadn't heard that," Putnam said.

"There is a stateroom," Blunt said. "It is kind of a flying Lincoln bedroom."

A Blunt aide said he first heard that the plane Pelosi requested had a bedroom on CNN's "Lou Dobbs" Monday evening. "She could take a circus with her, for crying out loud," Dobbs said.

A Democratic aide maintained that this was all nonsense.

166. Here's the CNN transcript. Neither a "757" or "C-32" was mentioned.
But yes, it was Lisa Sylvester who gave specs of a plane that would be similar in size to a C-32 and Dobbs hyped it up.

I wonder where Lisa Sylvester got this unsubstantiated info?? Even though later in her same report she even says that all Pelosi asked for was a coast-to-coast aircraft.

Dobbs incorrectly stated that Hastert's old plane could make the trip.

See, lots of twisting and turning going on there.

Blunt jumped on that and turned it into a luxury 757.

173. Hastert's old plane
Was a Gulfstream III. It most certainly CAN make the trip. The only problem they might encounter is if she has filled every seat and they have strong headwinds. Even then, it can still make the trip but it might have to stop at a military base and refuel.

Big deal. I'd put up with that "inconvenience" for a free coast to coast trip on demand.

She can take the plane if she wants but I don't think she is required to based on the Sergeant at Arms suggestion.

For me, I feel I have to take this position because I complained about Hastert setting the precedent of flying in government aircraft. I said it was a smokescreen for perks, unnecessarily expensive and giving into terrorist by letting fear dictate your plans.

Gulfstream IV/G400/G450
Gulfstream G400
Type Business jet
Manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace
Status Active service
Primary user United States Air Force
Unit cost $36 million (1998 constant dollars)
Developed from Gulfstream III
Variants Gulfstream V/G500/G550

The Gulfstream IV (or G-IV) and derivatives are a family of private jet aircraft produced by Gulfstream Aerospace, Savannah, Georgia, a General Dynamics company. The G-IV was later remarketed as the G300 refined as the G350. The Gulfstream IV-SP is a longer-ranged variant. It was relabeled as the G400, and subsequently refined into the G450. The C-20G Gulfstream IV is the military variant.

History

The Gulfstream G400 was formerly marketed as the Gulfstream IV-SP. It has a large cabin, long range of 4350 nautical miles (8060 km) and the same comfort and design that characterize the G series. Typical cruise height and speed are 45,000 ft and Mach 0.88. It costs about $36 million at 2004 prices (leasing is also an option). The replacement for this jet, the G450, has better performance and comes with Honeywell's next generation Primus Epic Avionic Suite, a Honeywell Visual Guidance System (an advanced HUD), the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS) and Goodrich Electronic Standy Instruments.

The military variant of the IV, designated C-20G Gulfstream IV in Department of Defense service, may be configured for cargo operations, passenger operations or combinations of the two. With passengers seats removed, it may be modified to the following configurations: three pallets/no passengers, two pallets/eight passengers, and one pallet/fourteen passengers. With a full complement of seats installed, the aircraft is capable of accommodating up to twenty-six passengers and a crew of four. A hydraulically-operated cargo door is installed on the starboard side of the aircraft, and a ball roller cargo floor is capable of accommodating palletized cargo. C-20G aircraft are operated Fleet Logistics Support Squadron Four Eight (VR-48) and Marine Air Support Detachment (MASD) at Naval Air Facility, Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, DC and at Fleet Logistics Support Wing Detachment, Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates a IV-SP modified to fly scientists and crew members at 45,000 feet around the tropical cyclone environment. The purpose of which is to drop many instruments called "dropsondes" to measure the windspeed, barometric pressure, humidity, and temperature as they fall to the surface of the ocean. By sampling the tropical cyclone environment with these dropsondes over a 4,000 mile track around the active hurricane, the forecasters at NOAA's National Hurricane Center and Hurricane Research Division can better predict where the hurricane will be "steered" by the upper level winds. They can also predict wind shear that will either increase or decrease a hurricane's strength. For the current mission, the G-IV SP performs flawlessly since it is capable of relatively quick speeds and can fly long distances with ample cabin space for the crew and instruments.<1>

In 1990, Gulfstream CEO Allen E. Paulson and a Gulfstream flight crew set 35 international records for around-the-world flight in a Gulfstream IV.

And that Airforce pilots were qualified to fly one. You learn something new every day. And where would they get the Gulfstream, since the Airforce doesn't currently have one. Oh, I got it, you are advocating that the government BUY a gulfstream for Nancy. Ahem, Talk about buying trouble.

When I saw your rather strident criticism of the Speaker based on what amounted to RW hyperbole, I wanted to set the record straight with the facts.

Sometimes we repeat things without realizing WHO put this stuff out in the atmosphere and when we nail down the true version of reality, they normally vaporize.

I don't want people reading this forum to mistakenly believe that there was anything of any veracity to this smear job.

72. Info from Talking Points Memo:
Late Update: TPM Reader JT from the airline industry writes in to say: "I work with aircraft logistics situations all the time. Having a plane that can make it to a destination non-stop (but only if conditions are right) is a nightmare for planning. It means you don't know if you need to plan for another hour on the ground for the fuelstop until a few hours before the flight. And the weather looked good yesterday but doesn't look good today. And (as you noted), if there's a lengthy ground hold before the flight, you'll make the stop regardless of weather. You would almost rather have a plane that definitely needed a fuel stop so you could at least plan around it."

Later Update: TPM Reader JT checks in again ...

In reading further about the planes… Hastert had a “C-20”… another name for a Gulfstream business jet. Assuming Hastert has the C-20A version, this would be like a Gulfstream II (able to make Illinois non-stop… but sometimes may not make it nonstop to California.
Pelosi wants a non-stop to California plane. Terrific… upgrade her to the C-20H. This is the Gulfstream IV equivalent. It’s basically the same size plane but has the range she wants.

Republicans are accusing her (per ABC article) that she wants the C-32. This is equivalent to a Boeing 757 which holds as many as 200+ passengers in all coach configuration. If this is what she truly requested, this is indeed a giant step up from what Hastert had been using.

Point #3 is the kicker. If she wants to go from Gulfstream to Boeing 757, that is quite a leap. If she just wants nonstop, give her the Gulfstream IV equivalent and be done with it.

Andrews doesn't have any C-20Hs. Hastert used a C-20b. The other available aircraft are a C-32, C-40B and C-37A. Since the C-20b was already pretty much taken out of the fleet, keep it for use with the Speaker.

188. He commandeered an entire damned Aircraft Carrier!
That stunt was promoted as the Chimpster supposedly flying out to sea to meet the crew and sail into port with them. Thing is, an Aircraft Carrier can cover better than 750 miles in 24 hours at full speed. By the time the Idiot in Chief got into the airplane that flew him out ot the carrier, the ship WAS ALREADY IN SIGHT OF SAN DIEGO! They literally had to steam in circles to facilitate that stupid photo op. Not to mention the crew had been on at least a 6 month cruise and were held up getting home to their families so Bush could wear a codpiece and be seen getting out of a Navy jet.

I remember reading somewhere that the cameras that filmed that event were placed in such a way as to not show the Southern California coastline in order to provide the illusion they were hundreds of miles out. The ship was in fact only about 30 miles out.
