The governor of Puerto Rico, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, signed a law that regulates the sport of cockfighting and recognizes them as a cultural right of the Puerto Rican people.
The Governor's office informed today that the Puerto Rico's New Millenium Cockfighting Law puts the sport under the authority and jurisdiction of the Department of Recreation and Sports, and creates a support program for the raising of fighting roosters in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture.
"The raising of fighting cocks is an agricultural industry of great importance to our economy, because the quality of our fighting cocks is exceptional", says the document in which the new law is explained.

The number of people that visit cockfighting pits in one year is estimated to be a million, producing around 100 million dollars in bets and food consumption among other activities.
