Fred Phelps is protesting bridge victims' funerals

The Westboro Baptist church and its cult leader Fred Phelps are planning to protest at the funerals of the victims who died during the bridge collapse. Why? Well isn't it obvious, because everyone in Minneapolis is a fag. or as he calls it, "land of the Sodomite damned." One of their spokes-demons (like it?) has already revealed the pickets they will carry: "God cast down the bridge... Thank God for 9/11... America is doomed... God hates fags... God hates fag enablers... God hates Minnesota."

this came up yesterday. The Patriot Guard only protects vets' funerals. So unless one of the bridge dead happened to be a vet, there's nothing they can do.

On the other hand, as mentioned elsewhere, there's nothing preventing other bikers from showing up, though MN does have a law restricting funeral protests.

The Patriot Guard does vets, firefighters, police, EMTs, and other public safety professions.

They are the ones I am seeing that are most vehemently opposed to Phelps and his assholes, so that is why I suggested them.

If you tell the state captain that Fred's group is showing up, they might do something.

How many people really want to be like that??

My mother lives in a senior cits apt building (Canada, near Toronto). Last election, some of the women were nattering away about same-sex marriage (some right wing candidates were still trying to turn back the hands of time). My mother just spoke up and said, well, what if it was your kid? What does it matter to you what people do in their private lives? And they pretty much shut up, and some of them probably even got the point. A little shame goes a fair distance.

I can't imagine any of them looking at Phelps and Co. and approving. They can be self-righteous nattering casual disapprovers in their own private spheres relatively comfortably, but do they really want to look like Phelps?

I dunno ... the excesses of the anti-choice brigade haven't persuaded the casual self-righteous disapprovers of the errors of their ways; but they really have something to point at and say We're not like that -- they really don't bomb and murder. I think it's maybe a little harder to point at Phelps and say We're not like that. Although rationalization is a powerful weapon against truth ...
