What great entertainment to hear her squirm. There were a few points when I thought she was going to hang up on him, and then you would hear her say, I am so into my yoga right now, I am not going to let myself get angry at you - and then they'd start talking about the dog or about their spouses or about men versus women, and Imus would bring things round to the lying, and she'd get mad again.

What I would have liked him to ask is this --

She likes Tim, says Tim doesn't hate anyone, Tim is a good guy etc etc

She apparently loves Libby, raising money for him etc etc.

Who does she believe - Tim who says Libby and he never discussed V. Plame or Libby who says Russert told him.

with the fact that my ex would lie about things that there was, quite simply, no reason to lie about. The lies did not benefit him, and the truth would not have harmed him in any way. Even worse, he would get caught in a lie and then have to tell another to cover it up.

Being rather scrupulous myself, I was puzzled as to why he would have told the initial lies, since there was no good reason for them. My roommate at the time commented that he lied because he was a liar, and that for liars lying is reflexive.

That led me to think about Jaggers in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. He withholds information even when it is not necessary to do so--and even when it is wrong to do so--because he craves power and control, and having information that others do not have or that others do not know he has is a form of power and control.
