1. The Second Amendment isn't going anywhere.
The gun lobby is alive and well, wealthy and powerful.

4. Gonzo wants the power to deny any U.S. citizen gun ownership
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 01:24 PM by benEzra
The Second Amendment isn't going anywhere.

Gonzo wants the power to deny any U.S. citizen gun ownership for any reason, without trial or due process, and with the evidence and accusation kept secret. Some Dems (coughLautenbergcough) are carrying water for him by pushing the legislation he requested.

There is also a bill in Congress (H.R.1022) that would ban the most popular civilian rifles in America, all shotguns holding over 5 shells, and all rifles and pistols holding over 10 rounds, as well as civilian guns that run afoul of the Style Police (protruding handgrips on rifles would be verboten, for example).

Both of those bills would effectively destroy the Second Amendment, were they to pass.

The gun lobby is alive and well, wealthy and powerful.

True, and we have strength in numbers (after all, there are ~80 million of us, of voting age), but the MSM really, really hates the idea of we peons owning guns, particularly guns that aren't of 19th century design, and they have a LOT of clout.

7. In the incredibly unlikely event that they pass, who's going to sign them into law?
Bush certainly won't.

9. Yes, he would.

Bush is as pro-gun-ban as his daddy, and the only reason it didn't make him bomb in the election was that Gore and Kerry both ran hard on a "We'll Ban More of Your Guns Than Bush Will" message, however unintentionally. I personally suspect that one of the reasons Ashcroft was pushed out and Gonzales brought in is that Gonzo is in favor of sweeping gun bans, and Ashcroft wasn't.

Bush is on record as supporting the original Feinstein ban, and it was BUSH'S ATTORNEY GENERAL who requested the legislation allowing the arbitrarily revocation of gun-ownership rights.

10. Whether or not Bush is personally pro-gun-ban is irrelevant.
The Republicans are simply not going to piss off their base and kiss the rest of their support goodbye.

11. If that were true, they wouldn't be running Romney and Guliani.
If that were true, they wouldn't be running Romney and Guliani, who both support sweeping gun bans.

The repub power structure doesn't like armed peons any more than the MSM or the DLC does, but after the Bush 1 loss in '92, they at least learned to leave gun owners the heck alone. It appears they've either forgotten that lesson, or returned to their roots.

Of course, they could be counting on a Dem to pull their keister out of the hot seat, as in '00 and '04, so they can play the "I'm the lesser of two evils" card.

12. "They" aren't running anyone, especially Romney or Giuliani.
Conservatives aren't happy with any of the Republicans running, which is why a dope like Fred Thompson actually has a real shot at the nomination without doing much of anything. Romney and Giuliani certainly aren't running because the conservatives were knocking down their doors.

13. True. It looks from here that the party establishment likes Romney, though,
but it's hard to say what's Romney-supporter PR and what's not.

14. Agreed.
He does seem to have some establishment support, but the general (positive) response by the right to a potential Fred Thompson candidacy could indicate that it's thinner than expected. Who knows?

3. Who cares about the Bill of Rights. We still have The Third Amendment.
As long as there aren't troops quartered in my home, I'm happy.

Pssst... the government is LISTENING now!

15. The First is barely on life-support.
"Free Speech Zones." That about says it all. Watch what you do, watch what you say. As for Due Process, it's pretty much kissed goodbye too - if you happen to be one of those vague "enemy combatants." And your property can be taken for no other reason than the pRez says so.
