Impeachment hearings: The White House prepares for the worst
The Bush administration is bracing for impeachment hearings in Congress.
"A coalition in Congress is being formed to support impeachment," an administration source said.
Sources said a prelude to the impeachment process could begin with hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee in February. They said the hearings would focus on the secret electronic surveillance program and whether Mr. Bush violated the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

The same rag that tried to astroturf the Obama went to a Madrassa and Hillary did it, story. They're also part of the current slime attempt regarding the Speaker Of the House's Airplane.

I'd rather see a panel start meeting in the Hague...the politicians in this country have no spine for a true prosecution of these war crimals.

16. ok. read the article. several problems. lists arlen specter as chairman of the
judiciary committee, even though dated end of january...
as we know, it is John Conyers, our John Conyers...
Also sites Al Gore as bringing up impeachment, but Al Gore is not at present, a part of this government....(although I HOPE he will be our next president.)
So, at best, the article is fishy, and written by an idiot.
sorry to say that guys.
However, the Conyers and Waxman hearings MAY all lead to impeachment and other jail sentences.

I really doubt the Judiciary Committee would be that accommodating. He'd crack. His arrogance would do him when combined with his ignorance.....and he IS IGNORANT. they know the role of the misadministration in 9/11 and Iraq WMD/DSMemo lies is much more easy to impeach on, the "lesser" crimes which they still might get caught for are the Plame leak, Katrina indifference, and Energy meeting with Cheney (oh I know there's plenty more, sadly!)

34. Is that the crack of Nancy "off the table" Pelosi's whip I hear?
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 10:53 PM by pat_k
I hope some high profile Dems are actually breaking ranks, but it is more likely that the propagandists at Insight are just making another futile attempt to "rally the base" by invoking the impeachment bogeyman.

If the assertion that "A coalition in Congress is being formed to support impeachment" is grounded in something real, not just their paranoia, I wouldn't break out the champagne just yet. If there really is such a contingent, you can be sure that Nancy "off the table" Pelosi is out there cracking her whip(1) to put them back in line.

It may take more than "coalition in Congress" to overcome the leadership's irrational resistance to impeachment. Pelosi and her fellow "leaders" have bought the fascist propaganda hook line and sinker. They've been terrorized by the "Washington Consultants" (2) who assure them that the "Republicans will tear you apart" if they even propose a timeline (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/2/6/3929/28782">Feingold on Ending the War). Heaven forbid they utter the word "impeachment"!

Perhaps the stark reality is finally hitting them; perhaps they are finally seeing that the ONLY way to fulfill their oath and get the nation out of Bush World is impeachment. Let's hope so. But whatever the reality, we can't afford to "wait and see." We need to do some whip cracking of our own.

_______________

(1) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16904772/">'Tucker' for Jan 30th

CARLSON: . . .you have John Conyers. . .

He is now running the Judiciary Committee. I mean, this guy does have a mind of his own. He‘s not going to push for impeachment?

STODDARD (the Hill): Well, he tried before. And when they were the minority and they were...

CARLSON: That's right.

STODDARD: And last May, he--there was some discussion about impeachment. And someone asked, I think, Nancy Pelosi, and she said, oh, no, it's not going to happen. And literally within 13 days there was a John Conyers editorial in "The Washington Post" saying, I'm not going to push for impeachment because blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

And I think that...

CARLSON: So she cracks the whip.

STODDARD: I think the whip is then cracked. But, you know, I know Republicans who voted—sane, grownup, respectable people who voted for Bush...

CARLSON: Right?

STODDARD: ... who would like him to not be in office tomorrow. . .

(2) Fiengold: "Washington consultants, particularly those who were part of the previous Democratic administration. . ." (Read "Jame Carville." Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that the leadership appears to be suffering from "http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3099491">Battered Democrat Syndrome" when Carville is "http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102945/plotsummary">Sleeping with the Enemy.")

41. MoonieTimes mag was trying to appeal to the base
yr old article - what was the angle for this propoganda machine? Prolly to start the meme of why the base should vote GOP in 2006 elections... or the I word. Libby Dole (head of the senate repub election committee) used this theme in the spring and summer. Sadly it just demonstrated how weak they were per issues to run on - in some speeches the central 'vote and give $$$ to us' was fear of investigations, fear of I, and fear of "San Francisco Values" of Pelosi.

66. Al Gore is quoted:
"I call upon members of Congress in both parties to uphold your oath of office and defend the Constitution,” he said. “Stop going along to get along. Start acting like the independent and co-equal branch of American government that you are supposed to be under the constitution of our country."

It's interesting that the Bush administration says, in defense of illegal wiretapping:
"The argument is that the American people will never forgive any public official who knowingly hurts national security."

Interesting they themselves should say that, considering the outing of a CIA agent, and the administration's role in that.

That should be a quote from the WH to keep in mind.

69. I hope no one will pardon any of them
after they are sentenced for racketeering. They are as bad as any Godfather movie....hell even worse. No conscience, any of them, all psychopath murderers for greed. Yuck, I give myself the willies thinking about the slime buckets. ( Leaves for shower.)

72. This is a political ploy, defuse the bomb
before it goes off. I'm just guessing of course, but I do not believe the Dems will move for impeachment against Bush. Now perhaps the Dems are trying to scare him, maybe they are the ones with the ploy, but either way I just can't buy into it really happenin, as sweet as a real impeachment and conviction would be.

79. I would like to say, for the record, this thread quite damning - for DU, that is.
...it's pathetic, really. Does anybody here pay attention, or is it just a big blab-fest?
