A Mecca mistake

Threatening to attack holy cities is what terrorists -- not Americans -- do

August 6, 2007
BY NEIL STEINBERG Sun-Times Columnist
Opening shot

We expect the Muslim world to leap up as one and denounce its violent extremists and hold it against them when they do not.

But do we do the same? How many of us even know who Rep. Tom Tancredo is, never mind that the Colorado Republican congressman and presidential candidate is urging that the United States try to prevent terrorist attacks by vowing to retaliate against the Muslim holy sites of Mecca and Medina?

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina," he said in Iowa last week. "Because that's the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they otherwise might do."

That's nuts, of course, not only contrary to every cherished American ideal, but counterproductive, as the prospect of the United States bombing Islamic holy cities would inspire, rather than deter, terrorists. Remember the overall goal of the Osama bin Ladens of the world -- to create an endless war between Islam and the West. To the degree that we remain strong and stick to our ideals, we can never be defeated. By even contemplating using the tactics of the terrorists -- to suggest this kind of collective punishment -- only advances their agenda.

A shame Tancredo couldn't think of that on his own. The people they let in Congress nowadays . . .

Have any Christian leaders denounced Tancredo for suggesting we should nuke Muslim holy sites?

6. How would they react if we overheard Osama talking about bombing St. Patrick's?
I imagine we'd react with outrage and umbrage.

And properly so.

But Mecca is different -- it's not one of the "real" religions.
