I'll vote Democratic in '08 even though Dems don't walk on water
Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 11:00 PM by Jersey Devil
When I was a local politician on the town council before I got elected the first time my running mate, an incumbent Democrat, told me something that has proven true over the years from the lowliest office like town council to the presidency. He said that Republicans office holders, no matter how bad a job they do, will always have the support of rank and file Republicans and though they may screw up from time to time, sometimes badly, they could always count on that support.

On the other hand, my friend and mentor related, Democrats, once elected, have to walk on water. They have to be perfect, never make mistakes, always do everything that everyone expects of them and never disappoint anyone or support of the rank and file would not be there and fellow Democrats will piss and moan as though as though treason has been committed.

He was completely right I found and today, even on the national stage it seems the Walk On Water Rule still seems to be in full force and effect.

So, OK, FISA never should have been passed and the Dems who voted for it screwed up. But all these vows not to support Democrats in 08 over that mistake is just one more application of the Walk on Water Rule. So go ahead, refuse to support them if you wish, but don't come crying to me when it's all over and Republicans are still calling the shots.

1. You're absolutely right, except for...
those Democratic strongholds where the Rebublicans son't even bother running. You know the places I mean.

But, outside in the real world where there is political competition, we might like to say the Republicans drink the Kool-Aid, but more to the point is that they have the focus and don't let these little things get in the way of their greater goals.

I can't imagine a Republican getting his knickers so knotted over a vote on a bill they don't like. They know perfectly well that there is plenty of time to "rectify" the situation before the world comes to an end. Rather than whine, they will get to work straightening things out their way.

One of the reasons they continually harp on the "patience" of our "enemies" is that they are masters of that sort of patience and understand it well.

Too manby of us don't.

4. Patience and obliviousness aren't the same thing. The Thugs
aren't patient.

And, it's no little thing for the party leadership to vote against the interests of their constituents, over and over again, against some political gain over the rainbow.

"This is the way the World ends . . . not with a bang but a whimper."

2. The "Walk on Water" rule is bullshit, there have to be standards for office holders...
and I would think that Upholding the rule of law and the Constitution would be that threshold. Apparently not, as long as they have a damned (D) after their name, there are no standards, period. No wonder our political system is so damned corrupt.

7. I grudgingly concur mainly because of the RIGHT WING MEDIA bias of the MSM!
The prevailing wisdom of a liberal media bias is complete and utter bullshit. The main stream media is nothing but a dog and pony show for the masses. Think of it as a subtler version of Geobbel's Ministry of Propaganda.

6. Here is Rec #5 for one of the most common sense posts I have ever seen here.
The trouble with common sense is that it is not common enough. Yes, Republicans will continue to support their less than perfect representatives running against Democrats. If Democrats are less than perfect or do not jump through the right ideology hoops, then many of the Democrats who voted for them pout and get pissy and threaten to leave or not vote. You hit this one square on the head.

8. Except, the majority of the people voted them in for the reason of change.
I believe the reason that Congress has such a low percentage is that the majority of the people are not happy because they are giving the president what he wants. They are disappointing the majority.

9. We have been used and abused and taken for granted.
But like an abused spouse who feels trapped by circumstances into staying, we will vote for the left wing of the War Party because we feel we have no choice. That situation sucks.

I don't expect our party to walk on water. I expected them to not roll over and play dead and vote the entire Bush war agenda right straight through the first session. It seems we do not exactly have representative government. I have a problem with that. Do you?

12. 'government' has NEVER represented every ideal I support
but our Democratic party has come damn close. At the very least, I think the majority of our Democratic legislators have worked hard against the republican opposition to overcome the numerical obstacles to the success of initiatives we share and can agree on.

14. Every Ideal?
There was an obvious mandate from the voters last november to bring an end to the war and put a stop to the outrageous behavior of the Bush regime. That mandate was simply, arrogantly, and with total disdain, ignored. Instead the entire War Party legislative agenda was rubber stamped through this congress with a pathetic charade of opposition. That, my fellow DUer, was a corrupt act of a dysfunctional duopoly, a kleptocracy that has no interest in representative democracy but merely in protecting its own and furthering a vile agenda.

11. until there's an alternative which is in a position to seriously challenge the republicans
working to promote and elevate the Democratic party will still be our best option. That doesn't mean we have to agree with every course they take. It just means that there is really no other alternative in place which would even accomplish the minimum our party has managed so far.

15. I guess that speaks to the fact that Dems are smarter than Reps and we expect are elected officials
to do what we elect them to do.

That being said, I too will vote Democratic in '08. I will just have to think about the SCOTUS situation when I punch my ballot.
