Letter to my Congresspersons Advocating Triple Impeachment
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 04:09 PM by Time for change
Dear
Senator Cardin:
Senator Mikulski:
Representative Van Hollen:
Speaker Pelosi:

It is way past time to re-establish respect for the rule of law in our nation.

The Bush administration’s assertion that it has no responsibility to comply with Congressional requests for information, along with its ordering of our Justice Department not to prosecute contempt charges, continues its long established record of utter contempt for the United States Congress and the American people.

Its violation of our Fourth Amendment rights by its warrantless spying program; our Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights through its arbitrary and indefinite imprisonment of hundreds or thousands of human beings while depriving them of their rights to a fair trial or to challenge their imprisonment; and our Eight Amendment rights against the imposition of cruel and unusual punishment by our government, shows that it has no respect at all for our Constitution.

Its use of nearly a thousand “signing statements” to avoid complying with laws enacted by Congress shows that it has no respect for the separation of powers required in our Constitution or for the rule of law in our country.

And its repeated violations of the Geneva Conventions by arbitrarily depriving its prisoners of all human rights required by those treaties shows its utter disdain for international law and thereby establishes the United States of America as a pariah nation and risks pushing us into World War III.

I have heard many in the U.S. Congress say that it has priorities that are more important than the pursuance of impeachment. I don’t understand what higher priority there could be than to re-establish democracy in our nation, nor do I see how other priorities can reasonably be pursued when our Executive Branch is pushing us towards dictatorship and world-wide conflagration.

I applaud the efforts of some Congresspersons to initiate the impeachment of Alberto Gonzales. However, impeaching him will not be enough. It is quite clear that Gonzales is nothing but a stooge for George Bush and Dick Cheney. Impeaching him while leaving the others in place would be like trying to get rid of weeds by ripping out their tops and leaving the roots in place.

I beg you to do all you can to advocate for the impeachment of Gonzales, Bush and Cheney. Doing all three individually would be fine, though doing them together would be preferable.

Sincerely,

XXX

I have submitted the above letter to my Congresspersons and to Speaker Pelosi through this site. If you agree with what I have to say, please feel free to use the same letter to submit to your Congresspersons. And/or give them a call using the same site to look up their telephone numbers. Or submit your own message. Or use the site to view the last 25 messages sent, and use the one you like best.

Here is a trimmed down message (to comply with the 250 word limit) that I submitted to my local newspaper (Washington Post) through the same site, which I would also like you to feel free to use if you like:

Dear Editor:

It is way past time to re-establish respect for the rule of law in our nation.

The Bush administration’s assertion that it has no responsibility to answer to Congress, along with its ordering of our Justice Department not to prosecute contempt charges, continues its long established record of utter contempt for the US and the American people.

Its use of nearly a thousand “signing statements” to avoid complying with Congressional laws shows that it has no respect for the separation of powers required in our Constitution or for the rule of law in our country.

And its repeated violations of the Geneva Conventions shows its utter disdain for international law and thereby establishes us as a pariah nation and risks pushing us into World War III.

Our Congress should have no higher priority today than to re-establish democracy in our nation. I don’t see how other priorities can reasonably be pursued when our Executive Branch is pushing us towards dictatorship.

It is well past time to remove from office those responsible for this.

Sincerely

XXX

9. That would be nice
They've received 7,627 from the site so far -- about 150 per Senator. That's just from this site. They probably won't read too many of them, but hopefully they'll get an idea of the strength and numbers of opinion out here.

16. They need spine
I have called them with this same message and been told "Senator/Congressman ____ is very interested in your comment" and I have even received e-mail to that effect but the fact of the matter is we put the Dems back in power (granted not strong enough but still a majority) and they are not using it with the same "killer instinct" that the Reps use. Last night's FISA vote is a case in point - they had a "glitch" which was nothing compared to the one where Delay held the vote open for hours past time in order to strong arm votes - and not only did the Democrats apologize, and offer to re-hold the vote, but they agreed to a committee to investigate it! Actions like this while mannerly, polite, and perhaps correct, aren't going to win with the current crowd in Executive power :(.

17. Yes, they're not using their power like we hoped they would
Edited on Sat Aug-04-07 01:03 PM by Time for change
I don't know why.

Lacking spine, as you say, is one theory, and I have considered that, and many see it that way. But it boggles my mind to think that so many of them lack spine.

I can only conclude that there are things going on that I don't understand, and that probably few people understand. I hope that some things will become apparent before too long.

Welcome to DU EvilChime :toast:

20. goats?
Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to have found a place where I can converse and vent - of late I have felt somewhat tongue tied with the atmosphere that seems to be growing in this country. I believe we also have the same representatives, perhaps we can lobby them!

I have often wondered if some in power have pictures of our representatives with goats or other unflattering likenesses that they hold over members of Congress at strategic times. It's the best reason I can come up with for them to continually thwart the effort that put them in power. While they say they don't have a veto proof majority (which is true) why can't they keep voting for bills that they should vote for and that their constituents want and let the shrub keep vetoing them? At some point someone else has to blink, no? Ah but I forget, the Iraqi parliament is on vacation, and they need to go home too <sigh>.

2. Great letter, too bad it will end up lining someone's bird cage.
The congress is clearly complicit in these crimes.
Don't expect them to do anything.

The only way to get our country back is to impeach them ALL and start over
with NO corporate control through money-
and you know that isn't going to happen.

3. If enough people clamor for it, Congress will be forced to act
That is my hope.

4. Congress is currently in violation of its oath to uphold the Constitution.
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 06:42 PM by BeHereNow
So far, no one seems to care, other than the minority of
people like some DUers, who understand what has transpired.

The entire nation would have to understand the violation
before they would act- I don't see that happening with
the current ignorant and arrogant US population.

Sorry, that is what I see.

10. I don't understand it
I wonder if our Congress is being blackmailed (as part of the warantless wiretapping program) or having their lives threatened

18. You have 20/20 eyesight
I see the same thing. I have looked into reasons why people vote against their own interests for the sake of one issue, and I am still mystified that they ignore things that would be good for them or their families for some ethereal abstract that doesn't impact their lives in the real world, OR, are conned into believing something because of an inability to focus longer than the length of a bumper sticker.

6. What a cutie- I do hope you play him some Menotti now and then...
Birds love Menotti you know.
I had a bird try to mate with my arm over a Menotti aria I was
singing to him at the time.

21. Bravo
You have written a compelling argument.

Van Hollen, Mikulski and Cardin are also my congresscritters. I'm going to print your letter out and add the words: "I agree with this writer and I strongly urge you to impeach Gonzales, Cheney and Bush for these reasons, as soon as possible."
They're going to get tired of reading it, but I'm going to ask my husband, daughters and friends to do the same thing.

Thanks!
