last night I was watching Tom Ridge and General McCaffrey for some reason discussing the bridge collapse and how we are going to pay for all of the much needed infrastructure repairs in this country. Old Tom pulled out the stock Republican response. It's not fair for people who aren't using these roads regularly to have to pay for them, so we need to be building more HOT lanes and toll roads. I guess there's something very wrong with me, but I have no desire to have to break out my wallet every time I want to use a fucking road. And I happen to use public transportation to get to work. Not to mention that it's inherently unfair for poor people to have to pay a disproportionate amount of their salaries to use the damned road to get to work.
I saw Tucker get handed his ass the other night while using this argument about schools. He said the great tragedy about so many schools being in such bad shape is that middle class people have to pay to put their kids in decent schools and they have to pay taxes on top of it. His guest (somebody from Newsweek, don't remember who) said, no the real tragedy is that poor families don't have a choice, they can't afford to put their kids in decent schools.
