I am happy to pay taxes to a government that promotes and supports...
science
healthcare
child welfare
education
infrastructure
environmental protection
primary prevention of disease, crime, abuse
racial, sexual, gender equality
diversity
the fight against poverty
the constitution of the United States

both at home and abroad!

However, I am damn sick of giving money to a government that neglects the things listed above and instead supports:

corporations
the mega-wealthy
arms sales
military expansionism
promotion of religion
intolerance and prejudice
and generally seems to see government office as a big "land grab" opportunity

Jesusfuckingchrist we have wasted so much time, treasure, and good will during the last seven years!

1. I'll bet you'd be even happier about it if tax preparation could take
only five minutes. If Edwards gets elected and succeeds in getting tax simplification, the IRS would calculate your tax burden for you (you would be able to correct any discrepancies), and all you'd have to do is sign a form and send a check. It'd be like paying your credit card bill.

3. MAD magazine had a wonderful idea in the '60s
the plan was for there to be a checkoff where the individuals could decide where their tax dollars were spent. It was satire, but something like that, in the form of checkoffs, would be good on a national level. I believe that some states have checkoffs for a certain percentage of tax dollars for things like conservation or education.

5. Taxes are good
when they aren't used for war and conquest and corporate welfare. Health Care anyone?
