For not sending him a spending bill....etc. Took him about 10 seconds into his first sentence to make this a political thing, and he is going after them HARD!!!

1. And what would he have done with the spending bill if he'd got it?
Vetoed it, probably.

And anyhow, didn't Tony Snow just blame the state? How can it be both the Congressional Democrats' fault and the state's fault?

Rethug. It IS the fault of the Republican governor and legislators of Minnesota, in addition to the Feds under Bush.

Minnesota has always prided itself on being extremely community minded with an infrastructure that works. Pawlenty and the "Taxpayers League" (a couple of rich guys with an inordinate amount of influence) have been doing their damndest to undermine that tradition.

Try google news, I had no problem finding it:

U.S. President George Bush sharply criticized the U.S. Congress for heading for vacation without passing any spending bills.

Bush also complained in a statement delivered Thursday in the White House Rose Garden following a Cabinet meeting about the amount of money Congress is considering spending, warning it would lead to a massive tax hike.

Failure to adopt a budget, Bush said, means "departments may not be able to move forward with urgent priorities.

"It doesn't have to be this way. They won last year's elections fair and square and now they control the calendar."

Bush said Congress has an obligation to pass spending bills in a "fiscally responsible way," noting that the 0.7 percent difference in what he proposed and what Congress is considering translates to $22 billion -- "and only in Washington" could that be considered a small difference, Bush said.

The new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.

President Bush offered his condolences to the families of the victims in the Minnesota bridge collapse.

The President made his remarks brief, then scolded Congress for not sending him spending measures in a timely fashion.

Meanwhile, the White House says an inspection two years ago found problems in a Minnesota highway bridge.

President Bush's spokesman, Tony Snow, says the inspection found some structural deficiencies. He says the 40-year-old bridge rated 50 on a scale of 120 for structural stability.

He says it "doesn't mean there was a risk of failure." But Snow adds that when a report finds deficiencies, it's up to the state to take "corrective actions."

The White House also announced that first lady Laura Bush will visit Minneapolis tomorrow. She'll console families of the victims of the collapse.

55. Here's exactly what he said. I think some of the outrage is overblown.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/08/20070802-2.html

He came out and said that he was just in a cabinet meeting and that one of the things discussed was the Minnesota bridge collapse. He then offered the standard words of assistance and concern. He then changed subjects, noting that another thing that the cabinet discussed was the status of pending legislation and, in particular, the "failure" of Congress to send any spending bills to his desk. The point wasn't to link the Minnesota bridge collapse to the bills, but rather to link the impending Congressional recess to the lack of bills...that is, to further the repub talking point that the Dems are a "do-nothing" Congress. If he was trying to create a linkage between the lack of spending bills and the bridge collapse, he would've fit in a reference to funding for infrastructure, but he didn't. Instead, he complained about the fact that the Democrats are proposing to spend "too much."

Bottom line: presumably, chimpy planned on bashing the Dems on budget issues on the eve of the recess, but then the bridge collapse occurred so he had to say something about that too.

He doesn't connect the bridge falling and the spending bills. They are two different issues.

I wish things wouldn't be exaggerated like this. It only weakens our arguments if we use the same tactics as the Republicans. Hell, there's enough real crap going down that we don't need to make any up.

I don't listen to Stephanie Miller because of this kind of thing.
She needs to fill up time so stretches any little point until it's a huge balloon.
This is exactly what Rush does. It's the same thing but on the other side. I hate it on both sides.

I want to know the truth, and if someone has done horrific things, we should know.
But if things are exaggerated to make the opposing side seem worse than they are I lose respect for the exaggerating side.

This was not two concepts clumsily tacked together. He is clearly inviting the inference that Democrats are to be blamed.

With bodies presumably still in the water, leave it to *'s brain to politicize a tragedy like this. Everything must be turned into a political battle point in KKKarl's worldview, and Democratic anger is gold.

49. George Bush: the buck passes here.
Nothing is ever his fault.

The Democrats are responsible for everything, and if there's any doubt, it would be Bill Clinton's fault.

George Bush is a failure. Like anything the Democrats could have passed since January would have had any impact on this situation. Bush has been in office, and his party in power, since the 2001 report that the bridge needed to be updated. How he justifies that this is a Dem problem in his tiny little mind is beyond me.

The man is a disgrace, and needs to be impeached!

61. You are. Here's a link to reality
YOu can make your own decision as to whether he was blaming the Democrats for the bridge collapse. Personally, I don't think so. I think he was planning to make a statement bashing the Democrats on the even of recess for not sending him spending bills, thereby furthering the repub talking point that the Democrats are a "do-nothing" Congress (what else can repubs talk about during the recess?). But then the Minnesota bridge collapse occurred, so he had to talk about that too. I see no effort to link them, including no refernece to funding for infrastructure. In fact, his complaint is that the Democrats want to spend too much.

similar to how he would connect 9/11 and Saddam, without actually making the connection. It's very subtle.

Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 02:52 PM by onenote
If they wanted to make that connection, there would have been a reference to infrastructure funding buried in the statement. Instead, it complained that the Democrats want to increase spending. I really think people are reading too much into this. Recess is coming. Repubs are heading home and have nothing to talk about. So the meme is that the Democrats are a do-nothing Congress. That statement was going to be made. But then a bridge collapsed so they had to say something about it as well.

The worst thing is that if Democrats make the claim that chimpy was trying to connect the non-passage of spending bills to what happened, some people will actually believe it.

88. I understand, but there's a danger
Maintaining our credibility is crucial if we are going to hold the higher ground against this lying bunch of cretins. Take, for instance, the claim (which fortunately doesn't appear with the regularity it once did) that there really are hundreds and hundreds of unreported US military fatalities in Iraq and, in particular, that fatalities that occur in military hosptitals outside iraq from wounds incurred in iraq aren't counted. This, as a brief review of icasualties.org reveals, is pure blather. But people insisted on believing it because they take the view that anything that chimpy and his gang tells us must be untrue. A lot is, but if they say the sky is blue, I for one may go outside to make sure, but if its in fact blue, I'm not still going to insist that they are lying.

Again, I understand how we've gotten to this point, but the reason I act like the reality police is that if we undermine our own credibility we undermine our ability to convincingly attack the credibility of the repubs.

"let's cover our ass" comment by Bush. They're masters at using words that indirectly BLAME others (namely the Democratic party) Their subtle, stinging, snide, wise-cracks easily points the blame somewhere else. They have done this through their whole administration--Iraq/911 is a prime example. It's their MO, for God's sake and he's doing it again. When has Bush taken responsibility for any of his MANY fuck-ups:shrug: NEVER!

I do agree that the state is responsible for making the demands for infrastructure revenue, but Bush has set the climate in D.C. that states shouldn't ask for help with state problems, ex: health care, roads, medicaid, etc...

...makes me sick...

58. Pawlenty vetoed the increase in gasoline tax
You know, the one that goes straight to MinnDOT for bridges and highways?

No, can't have that, even though an extra nickel at the pump means a dime in the coffers because of federal matching funds.

Gas prices can fluctuate by 15-20 cents per day, making Big Oil and hostile countries rich, and that's okay, but GOD FORBID we add a nickel to the gas tax.

He needs to be reminded the rethuglicans (HIS PARTY) had total control of ALL three branches of government for at least six years. There's no reason why all our problems should not be solved by now and no reason why we should not be living in a Utopia. Besides, even if the decison had been made in November to improve, repair or replace that bridge the work would not have even been completed by now.

Another pack of lies from the devious and corrupt BushCo regime.

83. We do need to remember...
...this is part of their "best defense is a good offense" style. And it has worked very well for them. Because this is how they get out in front of it right away -- start out with a good fingerpoint, put the other guys on defensive. With the mighty wurlitzer aiding and abetting, this has been a winning strategy.

The good part is this is an indication that they *know* they are vulnerable on this issue. Otherwise he would *not* have come out swinging. So this is our clue that we need to press on this issue until they squawk.

No need, when pressing the issue, to respond to Bush's ridiculous fingerpoint. Just lay the facts out: how much the tax cuts took away, how much the billions spent in Iraq could have been doing for infrastructure here in the USA, things like that.
