Video of Tom Snyder interviewing Mayor Dennis Kucinich, 1978
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtnVjM5pTn4

Snyder conducts a fairly hard-hitting interview during a controversial period of the Kucinich administration. And Kucinich definitely holds his own in this clip, and you can see that he has maintained the same stance of fairness and social justice throughout his life of public service.

This brings back memories for me, as I was an admirer of both these men during that time (still am, of course), with Kucinich only a few years older than I and already the mayor of Cleveland in his early 30s. I also enjoyed watching the "Tomorrow" show as often as my schedule would permit - back before the age of cable when there were only 3 major networks. (Ah, those were the days!)

This is one of several "new" videos in memory of Tom Snyder posted on YouTube in the past few days.

Rest in Peace, Tom, and Best to You in your campaign, Dennis!

3. Only three networks? You forgot PBS!

And PBS was really good in the early Seventies. "Great American Dream Machine," "Elizabeth R" (a BBC production, a miniseries starring Vanessa Redgrave), "The Forsyte Saga." There were good music shows, too, through which we first discovered Doc Watson and James Taylor. Good old days. . . By 1978, we no longer had tv because there was too much violence on it for kids, so I don't know how PBS was then or later.

Now we have satellite with a zillion channels and not one of them is PBS! It shows up on the menu screen but we don't get it, would have to buy some extra package to get it, probably with a zillion channels we don't want.

Thanks for posting the video!

5. Oops, my bad! How could I forget PBS?
I was working up in Chicago at the time & watching "The MacNeil / Lehrer Report" and "At The Movies" with Siskel & Ebert, with occasional specials with Bill Moyers, on PBS before they were well-known and went mainstream. Lots of great quality TV that still has yet to be matched today, regardless of today's cable.

That also reminds me how faithfully I watched Donahue when his show was in his heyday up there. I learned SO MUCH from that show and how he interviewed his guests. I wish those had been the days of easy access to VCRs, because I would've taped a lot of those shows.

I also remember hearing in those days that were were soon going to be 24-hour news and sports channels and I thought that was CRAZY!

4. That was fascinating!
He was only 31, but his political instincts were already finely honed!

Thanks for posting...

6. I watched this just the other day.
I noticed a couple of things about DK, outside of his obvious youth, lol.

He has some of the arrogance of youth and inexperience; not too blatant, but I noticed a difference.

He is, even then, standing his ground, standing on principle, representing the people, and taking on the status quo. That hasn't changed, other than to grow stronger.

I really enjoyed this. I was just out of high school at the time, myself.
:D

8. VERY shameless kick, because I had so much fun watching this again!
Wish I had posted it earlier in the evening. I've been reading up in Wikipedia about DK's tenure as mayor, and perhaps the scariest part is that there was a hit on his life when he was supposed to be in a parade, but got sick and had to miss the event, thank God!

He still has a great smile and glint in his eye in consation (when he isn't speaking adamently on a serious topic).

Oh yeah, and take note of the fact that the interview takes place with Snyder and Kucinich sitting in a booth in a diner while "The Boy Mayor" is grabbing a bite to eat. At each table is one of those mini-juke boxes! Again, shades of the past...

10. Ah-hah! My grandfather (RIP) couldn't stand DK
the 'boy mayor.' (You see, Gramps was an old fashioned Republican) Anyhow, I remember him railing against this young mayor of Cleveland. Thanks for posting, I will get to see what got Gramps all fired up.

Gramps would be very mad at me, because I happen to like Dennis. :hi:

11. Dennis looked like he could have been 17 years old in that...
...interview. That's a great blast from the past.

If corporate owned MSM were smart and had enough wisdom to look beyond next quarter's profit statement, their stupid ratings, and their corporate client/sponsor demands, they'd do everything they could to help get someone like Kucinich elected president, because our country is rapidly imploding under the weight of BushCo and the Neocons, and if the U.S. has no future, neither does corporate MSM.

Nothing confirms the validity of the saying "Greed makes you stupid," more than the behavior of our corporate owned MSM. Where do they think their place will be in the new totalitarian state? What a bunch of mindless, greedy, idiots -- shilling themselves out of a future, poetic justice to be sure.
