West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel joined a group of 15 local elected officials from throughout the country Tuesday to march to the White House to protest the Iraq war and later tell members of Congress that they want American troops brought home.
The delegation, carrying a packet of letters and referendums representing 300 cities, towns and states that have opposed the war in Iraq, tried to hand the package to guards at the White House, but when that failed, later gave the written protests to anti-war lawmakers on Capitol Hill.Though West Palm Beach has not voted on the war, Frankel, co-sponsor of a resolution opposing the war that was passed by the U.S. Council of Mayors, said she hopes there will be a city war vote soon.

"There's a long history of being willing to sacrifice during wartime ... but I call this war in Iraq a war for nothing," said Frankel, a Democrat, whose son is a Marine Corps captain who served in Afghanistan. "I cannot understand ... why we went in and why we are still in there."
She cited several West Palm Beach residents who could be beneficiaries of federal aid were it not for the war: "John has Alzheimer's," she said. "Ida is so frail she's unable to cook and she's unable to shop. ... They are one of a thousand people in my community who are waiting for a federal program called Meals on Wheels. ... Imagine that, living in the United States in America, being 90 years old and waiting for food."
