Ever use Dragon on DU?
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 01:29 PM by Jackpine Radical
I was dictating some reports this morning and was still wearing a headset when I decided to escape to DU for a little respite. Since I was all set up to do it anyway, I decided to try dictating my posts here. Works like a charm. Except for the typos of course. Turns out I had to edit the subject line for typos. I guess Dragon is about is error-prone as I am.

3. It's a dirty job, but
somebody's got to provide the inadvertent comic relief around here.

4. I tried
but i found it is easier for me to type, even with my numb right hand and use a left hand touch type, right hand semi hunt and peck than it is for me to use Dragon voice's command syntax, and when I messed up, correcting and back filling was too slow and frustrating.

And I lose my temper too easily these days.

6. I'm trying to get more proficient at it
because I'm always writing long reports, and it would be great if I could find a reliable way to cut down on the amount of time it takes me to do them. The process is getting easier, but I find that you have to proofread things very carefully because Dragon can make some totally idiotic-sounding mistakes, and can even make things come out to say the opposite of what you mean if you're not careful.the other day for example, when I was doing a competency evaluation report, the stupid program converted the word "competent" into "incompetent." It gives me chills to think about having it insert that kind of error at random into my work.

9. probably apocryphal
There was a group that worked on a first generation electronic translation program from English to Japanese.

They clipped a small sample from the Wall St. Journal and fed it to the algorithm.

It responded with the string in Japanese that translated to "Guests mail large tumor."

Target string? "Company posts sizable growth."

Language still a bit squishy for binary.

11. The real punch line of the story when I heard it
was that the cost for the program was several million dollars.

IF you use it all the time (if you haven't) you might want to pick up a different headset . Ambient noise can be a big problem. There is a better productivity feature set in 9 especially the "natural punctuation."

Its really getting there... compared to when they first started with voice recognition technology.
