2. Yeah, bird flu is pretty freakin' huge news here.
But considering how well our government handled Foot & Mouth and BSE, I'm sure the situation is under control. :sarcasm:

It only seems like we don't hear about it here in the US:

Take your pick of very recent stories

4. nothing happened to it....
It's still out there. The likelihood of a pandemic recombinant strain is probably decreasing, but of course that's the sort of thing that one can only evaluate over time, and all it takes is one event to jump the species barrier. In any event, it's still too early to say whether that bullet was dodged, but it's a near certainty that another pandemic flu with high mortality will eventually occur, so if we've gotten a reprieve from the avian flu I hope we use that reprieve to improve our ability to respond once the big one comes along.

6. My glibbness really is directed toward media.
it's just bizarre how every other day is about the next pandemic and then *poof* the whole thing is just "gone".

11. Point taken. I suppose I am stunned because I've read many posts
dismissing Avian Flu outright as a scare tactic. Granted it comes at a time when the media is bombarding its viewers with terror alerts and there is just so much fear mongering people can take. However from what I've read I take it seriously. Several months ago when it was still big news, a friend of mine who is a doctor said some colleagues were flying to central Europe to get yet to be proved vaccinations and others who were stocking up on Tamiflu. He takes takes the threat seriously but is taking a wait and see attitude.

8. whorporate media no longer finds it 'sexy'!
Since the fear factor was short lived (and did not produce the desired fear level), it was jettisoned.
