This would present Congress with a difficult choice.

If Congress wants to 'get rid of Gonzo' they almost certainly will have to face a Bush nominated replacement who might be even worse(if that is possible).

THis WH strategy would head off impeachment of Gonzo, and yet likely leave him in place for most of the rest of Bush's term if Bush nominates a stream of 'terrible' nominees for AG that drag out confirmation hearings.

Hope this does not happen ... just trying to think like the evil-minded Karl Rove.

2. Reid can thwart this...
Apparently recess appointments can happen only after Congress is recessed for ten or more days. So Reid may call a session every eight, nine days. This may be a successful gambit. I hope so!
Better that this entire administration have sudden fatal seizures; I could live with Pelosi in the WH.

4. If the OP strategy is used, they get to keep Gonzo and blame the Dems for not confirming replacement
I do not see them wanting another AG, even a bad one. They have to craft a strategy to keep Gonzo in the position as 'gatekeeper' of the Bush secrets until he leaves office.

A recess appointment could certainly be made but it would be unpopular.

Repubs are going home to meet with unhappy constituents. THey really have no answer to questions regarding Gonzo. They are not stepping up to defend him, and surely do not want to be associated with Bush in any way.

I will go with the OP strategy until I see something different emerge.

Keep in mind that McNulty has resigned but stayed on until a replacement could be found. Not a stretch to see Gonzo do the same considering all other other resignations in the DOJ that have taken place.

7. Bush can do a lot of evil b/c he will not run for reelection & his poll numbers are rock bottom
A President that is not facing reelection and realizes he has lost public support is 'freed' in a sense to commit all kinds of politically unpopular actions.

Bush is a very dangerous man right now.
